I don't say gazunite either, because I thought it meant "God bless you", in German.

After someone says bless you. I don't usually respond. Although I do say gazuntite. It's a German wish for good health after someone sneezes.

Dianna, when somebody says "bless you" after you sneeze, do you say "thank you"? I'm always have a moment of mental confusion and say nothing.

I have to admit that I am not completely "out" as it were.  I certainly don't announce my non-belief, but if it comes up in conversation with others, I will mention it.  However, the one group of people I am still wary of talking with it about are my in-laws, who are pretty religious.  I have a great relationship with them right now, and I really don't want to ruin it (they live 15 minutes away, and we see them all of the time).  I am quite OK with this for now (perhaps because I have only been an atheist for a year now).

And I wanted to say I am having fun with all my oh so religious relatives here. It started with emails. I never criticize, or start it, but I do counter preachy emails with information that challenges their way of thinking. Carefully, without blaming or aggression. I had only one cousin who was furious with me, but it turned out that she was angry at all the family and moved to S. Carolina to get away from the sin and darkness of Southeast Ks. Go figure.

Hi everyone, I got to live in New Hampshire for 7 years. We joined a group of nonbelievers, secular humanist...  It was wonderful. You could sneeze and no one said "bless you." lol I lived in New Hampshire for 7 years. It was so much easier there! I met a pharmacist, a licensed nurse's aide and a school counselor who were "out". So I got to tell them about me and had some very pleasant conversations with them.  Also we belonged to a group of nonbelievers. They met once a month. That was fun. You were open to speak your mind. I miss them. Now I am home in Ks.

Sometimes I wish I could move. Being in Kansas really sucks sometimes. But as everyone says, " the cost of living is good". The mental cost of living is NOT good, at least for us Atheists.

Megan, best we can do is realize that eventually they'll learn to be tolerant and accepting or just ignore them as they ignore you.

Well Linda we are home of Fred Phelps... only way this state could be any worse is if we had the LDS Cult in populations as great as SLC here.

@ Linda: Ironically enough most of my "believing friends" are back in Atlanta where I'm originally from.  You would think that ATL is progressive enough to get past religious beliefs.........lol  Apparently not.
