#6: Are you saying that there never was Jewish slavery in Egypt, period? Be seeing you.

Oooo! I like this 5th child. Genius.

Their house their rules. I think it is part of using religion against me. My husband and I are the lost atheists, but they keep pushing with the kid. Sometimes, don't you have to draw a line in the sand? Why is tradition more important than lying to children?

I would just try to take the seder as a cultural history lesson. While the story of Jewish slavery in Egypt has been found to be pretty much bunk it is historical fact that Jews have been telling the Exodus story for ages. While the narrative itself is historically inaccurate the seder is true in terms of cultural history. Another idea is to invent the idea of a 5th child, the skeptical child to asks the questions that make the adults uncomfortable with their own dogma and religious assumptions.

Join the party after the sedar or leave the room during the sedar.

My brother (who hosts) thinks that the seder has to be "gotten thru" sort of the price of admission to a family reunion. So by not doing the religious thing, I miss out on many out of town relatives.

but why shouldn't the "seder" just be family stuff anyway? The biblical talk is garbage and even the believers know that the archaelogical evidence isn't there. I don't want my son lied to.

Have your own secular sedar! Invite other freethinkers!

I am fortunate to have The Birmingham Temple, the Society for Humanistic Judaism and the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism in my neighborhood (Metro Detroit). Also Arbiter Ring, Jewish Parents Institute and Shalom Aleichem.

I will compromise and attend a sedar that is not entirely secular ONLY if I can read what I bring of my own choosing :)

HTH!

What do you all do at passover time? My family won't invite me for dinner since my hubby and I won't seder with them.
