The atheist Mogen Dovid is quite creative. One point of clarification: Black Freethought is not just for black atheists; it's for all interested in the subject. There are non-Jews with an interest in Jewish culture and affairs. The future will not be like the past. People who carry on traditions may not in the long run be exactly the same people who initiated them, esp. in the USA, where each successive generation is radically different from the previous one.

Hello Jewish Atheist group members. I created this group soon after joining Atheist Nexus. I wanted to find other "Jewish Atheists". I was raised in Reform Judaism and wavered between theism and agnotic most of my life. That's until 5+ years ago when.. you know.. I began to question my faith but only started to do so while preparing my on children for Bar Mitzvah. Its funny that I tried to renew my faith by learning what I could to help my children.

It took a few years of painful reflection but I finally settled into being an Atheist. I still consider myself a "Jew".. Just like someone would consider themselves Italian or Greek. It is our cultural background that makes us Jewish.. not our former religious beliefs. You would not expect an Irish man to stop calling themselves Irish just because they become an Atheist? Would you?

I am sorry for not being around. Life gets a head of us sometimes. I went through the wall posts and appreciate the discussion. I don't think I will change the group description. It is exactly what I intended. I do not think it is exclusionary at all. No more exclusionary that the "Black Freethought" or "Atheist Writers" groups. I am not black and I am not a writer.. I don't feel left out. Those groups simply don't hold any interest to me.
The purpose of groups is for people of like interests to socialize. I did change the group logo. Anyone have other suggestions?

Again, I think the description for this group should be revised as I've suggested. Or maybe I should quit it. I do like the Humanistic Jews I've met. But just like with intermarriage, this group should explicitly open itself up to all sympathizers.

@Humanist Mark. The article was just posted online 2 days ago, Nov. 20, and the author might not necessarily know about HJ. Why not repeat your comments in the comment section of that article for the author's benefit and also that of any of the readers who don't know about HJ? Your comments below would be perfect copied-and-pasted into the comment section there.

Once again, I think the group description should be changed: (1) minimally, to "atheists of Jewish origin, religiously or ethnically; (2) maximally, to "all atheists with a serious interest in Jewish matters, including but not limited to atheists of Jewish origin, religiously or ethnically". You see what I'm after here, both definitionally and in terms of inclusion. I do not like exclusionary groups.

I've experienced the opposite in my life re: ex-Christian atheists. I tend to find such atheists feel that Jews are generally more reasonable than Christians. Being that the Jewish doctrine says to seek knowledge and has no messiah. People have said its somewhat agnostic because of these things. The running joke I always hear is "Aren't all Jews atheists". I suppose that could be taken negatively if said by the wrong person, but I've never heard it said that way (except from the white supremacists and only online). I personally hear the most Jew-bashing the most is from good ol' American (current) Christians... But, sadly, I'm sure its quite popular in other countries as well.

Talking about how Atheists attack Jewish character - I support creating that thread - I have a feeling I'm going to learn a lot from following that thread!
