@TAdamson, even skeptics need some method for sifting the reality out from the background noise. My recommendation is to stick to the evidence, and stick to the science. The science behind ADHD is solid, and getting better all the time.

Still, you may be correct that your issues are not due to ADHD per se. It could be the case that you have some other underlying issues which have similar symptoms to ADHD. This is why it's so important to get a thorough diagnosis which explicitly attempts to rule out other conditions. If you're still doubtful of your diagnosis, I think it's reasonable for you to get a second opinion.

But on the other hand, don't discount the evidence that you already have. If difficulty with attention, focus, distraction, and/or impulsivity affect your life in consistently negative ways, and Concerta helps with at least some of those symptoms, that seems pretty indicative (not knowing more about you, and not being a doctor). Perhaps you have ADHD, but your drug/dosage is off. Myself, it has taken a while to work out appropriate dosages for my combination of issues, and I'm still in the process of tweaking it, with the guidance of my doctor. It gets better and better each time.

Finally, I found that treating ADHD without also treating my anxiety was an incomplete solution for me. Since I started getting treated for anxiety, I've been able to progress much faster on the ADHD side of things, too. You may want to talk to your dr. about your specific combination of symptoms, and where the trouble still lies.

Good luck!

I continuously self diagnose and still don't believe I have ADHD. All the indicators are there and my son, who has aspergers as well has most of the same traits I do, but more pronounced. My wife says theres a big difference in me when I'm on Concerta from when I'm not. My psychiatrist, who also treates me for anxiety disorder and insomnia says all the traits are there. Yet, ever the skeptic, I'm still not convinced I have ADHD. The chaos, the anxiety, the implusiveness, and the tuning out of everything when I am doing something I like to do are normal. I get more work done on Concerta, but as a programmer, I do fine without it. It's the nonprogramming stuff I struggle with. And the impulsiveness, which Concerta is of no help. Anybody else feel the same? Being a skeptic with anxiety disorder means that self doubt is something that can really wreck your life.

I think it might be at the base of my rabid curiosity that drives me to continue to try and learn as much as I can.

Hmm... you have a point. Novelty is like crack to the ADHD mind. What is more novel than learning something new and exciting? :)

I have to say I am always wary of self-diagnosing, however I cannot deny that after reading through a lot of the forums and comments that I seem to fit the ADD/ADHD bill. When I was younger I was diagnosed as hyperactive and placed on Ritalin for a time, however my Mom decided to take me off of it after a while. I think she didn't like how it was affecting me, but I honestly do not know the real reason. As it stands these days I mostly just cope with how my brain works and deal with the self-distractions as best I can. Focus can be an issue but I try and keep myself challenged and interested in things that I am required to do. I think it might be at the base of my rabid curiosity that drives me to continue to try and learn as much as I can.
