Bullying and teen suicide are nothing new, but in recent years we have become increasingly aware of the damage bullying does ― to both children and adults alike ― with what seems to be a sudden spike in teen suicides related to being bulled.
The death of a child, particularly at his or her own hands, is never acceptable. It is a blight on human society that schools do not do more to prevent this, that parents can raise their children to be mean and spiteful to others, and that bullied kids don't have a support system on which they can rely when they are faced with feelings of despair and isolation.
The content of this group will undoubtedly be difficult to deal with. It is painful to see children ostracized from their peers, and made to feel as if they don't matter or don't belong. Of course, bullying is not confined to schools, either. Many adults experience bullying at home or in the workplace as well. All these issues will be explored in this group.

Comment by Sentient Biped on May 3, 2012 at 3:22pm Hazing charges filed against the killers of gay student. I feel some disappointment about the charges. A group of young men bullied and beat a young man to death, and they are charges with something less than murder. The linked article does not state the charges - HuffPost has more to say. They claim that, because multiple blows results in Champion's death, no single blow could be claimed to have killed him. It's hard for me to picture that this was not a hate crime - the victim was gay, and witness stated that he received worse hazing because he was gay.

YES! ABSOLUTELY! WITHOUT QUESTION!
Loren, I just read your comment and I agree! So ....

God Is A BULLY.
And there have been and are an uncounted number of others who, consciously or not, have followed that example.
Richard and Dallas you both have some god insight into what the cause of bullying is. Good thing we have this group.
It seems to me that bullying comes from an inability to accept difference, plus an inherent insecurity about one's place in the crowd. Bullying someone reinforces one's (often mistaken) place in the scheme of things.
Coltyn was a gorgeous young man, too.
I agree Loren. While it is not universally true, there does seem to be a commonality in these suicides, namely that the person seems to hide from everyone their distress or unhappiness. That's not always the case, but one cannot help but wonder how things might have been different for them if they had someone to open up to.
