HUMANE ATHEISTS is for anyone interested in issues surrounding animal welfare and animal rights. You don't have to be a pet lover, a vegetarian, or an activist to join. You just have to like exploring new ideas and sharing information about the relationships between animals and people, and how we should or should not treat them.

I welcome posts on personal experiences, news and inspirational stories, action alerts, ethical questions, humane living options such as products and websites, and related topics.

I look forward to your contributions, and I hope that we can make HUMANE ATHEISTS one of the most active and vital groups on Atheist Nexus.

What the heck!  I replied to a post about cute pet sloths.  Suddenly they turned into chihuahuas!   Dallas, did you post a piece about sloths, or am I hallucinating?

Oh, no! Don't tell me that sloths are the new fad pet.  And, please, don't tell me that Dallas Gaytheist really wants to OWN (buy??) an animal who belongs in the trees of South America.   Animal advocates are trying to outlaw the sale, importation and possession of exotic species.  The fact they are cute is not an excuse to exploit them.  Dallas, did you mean you would like to adopt a rescued sloth?  Of course you did!

Unbearably cute. I want one for my very own.

@ George, I've been meaning to read that story, but haven't found time yet. This may be worth a letter-writing campaign. That's just unfair.

This week I tried listening to Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer, and I hated it. I didn't even finish the first CD. I think he writes like a 13 year-old, and his word play is sophomoric. And it didn't help that the narrator was just awful, too. He made the mistake of "reading" the book to you, instead of telling you the story.

Nevada air cargo worker loses job after reporting animal abuse

Lynn Jones was a baggage handler at Reno-Tahoe International Airport when she saw an emaciated hunting dog, its paws bloody, its body covered with sores.

The listless pointer was lying in a pet carrier in the cargo area of the airport on Nov. 15, waiting to be shipped to Texas.

"The Transportation Safety Authority officers couldn't even get the dog to stand up to be X-rayed," said Jones, who was then an employee of Airport Terminal Services, the facility's contractor.

Jones said her supervisor told her to load the dog on the plane because the animal's paperwork was in order and its condition wasn't her concern. She said she was warned she would lose her job if she kept carrying on about the dog.

Survey: Indonesians killed 750 orangutans in year

Villagers living on the Indonesian side of Borneo killed at least 750 endangered orangutans in a year, some to protect crops from being raided and others for their meat, a new survey shows.

Sad: 22 sperm whales die in Australia

You know the parasitic fungus that takes over the minds of ants and changes their behavior? I wonder it something similar could be happending with whales that causes them to beach themselves.
