HUMANE ATHEISTS is a group for people who are interested in trying to live a humane life by understanding the issues surrounding animal welfare.
Members: 268
Latest Activity: on Tuesday
HUMANE ATHEISTS is for anyone interested in issues surrounding animal welfare and animal rights. You don't have to be a pet lover, a vegetarian, or an activist to join. You just have to like exploring new ideas and sharing information about the relationships between animals and people, and how we should or should not treat them.
I welcome posts on personal experiences, news and inspirational stories, action alerts, ethical questions, humane living options such as products and websites, and related topics.
I look forward to your contributions, and I hope that we can make HUMANE ATHEISTS one of the most active and vital groups on Atheist Nexus.

Kitty-cam reveals the secret lives of cats.
Yes, maybe that too. But you'd think a prion disease wouln't "stump" veterinarians.
Comment by Sentient Biped on April 17, 2012 at 9:28pm Or, the cat food contains bones or brains from dead cows and dead sheep. I think that's where mad cow disease originated in humans.
Comment by Sentient Biped on April 17, 2012 at 9:02pm Dallas, I'm going to make a WAG (known as a Wild-Assed-Guess) and say that the cat disease is a prion, like Mad Cow Disease, Jacob-Creutzfeld, and Scrapie. As time passes, I'm sure more will come out and you can prove me wrong.
Scary disease is turning cats into 'living robots'
Cats in the U.K. have come down with a strange ailment that turns them into "living robots." Twenty-one reported cases of "staggering disease" have been reported in rural Scotland, with the victims' movements becoming progressively more robotic and stiff. Bizarrely, one of the earliest symptoms is seen when the cats become "over-affectionate." There is no cure for the disease, which has also cropped up in Sweden and Austria, and most of the cats with the illness survived just 11 months after symptoms first appeared. Vets are so far stumped by the disorder, but believe that something in the cats' environment might be overstimulating their immune system.
Tonya, I understand your concerns, but I don't think that exists. Vaccines have to be tested on the subjects they're going to be used on, or else you may not know what to expect. I spoke to my vet once about this, since they experiment on animals when they go to vet school, but she said the standards are very humane today compared to the past. Of course, vets don't develop the vaccines. That's done by drug companies. So who knows. But making your cats suffer with URI doesn't alleviate the past misfortunes of other cats. I understand your concern, really, but even if you find one that isn't tested on animals, that doesn't mean they're not using science/research that was tested on animals in the past by someone else.
Comment by Tonya Wynn on February 16, 2012 at 3:30pm I've asked before, lomg ago, but I'll ask again..Does anyone know of a HUMANE source of cat/dog vaccine where no animals ,esp. cats or dogs, are hurt/tested on? Please email me directly!! My cats keep getting URI (I have 20+ cats), but I no longer feel right about vaccines since they are tested on other cats and dogs.
Chillax, Dogly. I would never attempt to raise an exotic pet. It's way too risky for the owner and the animal, and yes, it does endanger wildlife. I just meant that I want one cuz they are so unbelieveably cute. It's a figure of speech.
