Yes, I know, there have been plenty of tributes to the Hitch.  Considering the impact that he had on the world and on atheism, one more can't hurt.Besides ... things like this keep Hitchens alive for…Continue

@Pangea Girl: Hitchens is somewhat right of center politically, though he'd probably be embarrassed by now at the behavior of the current conservative Downing Street occupant, soon to be taken down by the connection with the Aussie pirate.  Still, it is his atheism that colors every line he writes.  An atheist of his intellect carefully analyzes any situation with a view toward exposing its theocity or not, and you can't argue with him by reliance upon dogma and talking points on the left or right.  It also helps that he is one of the best writers of his generation.

Thank you! This conversation prompted me to read in its entirety the wikipedia on him. I want to read all his books and hope to, too. Hitchen's causes are only that; and I admire him for that. Learning about his approach this way is very helpful. As I said; I'm a lefty but I agree with what he takes up as his beliefs. Suprisingly!

Hi Pangea Girl! In fact - he is a former socialist Marxist and he is still to the left on most issues. He is simply an intellectual who understands the realities of dictators and tyrants and Islamic fascists. He shares the plight with the people in the Middle East who want real freedom - whether the Iranian people who demand nothing more and nothing less than a secular democracy - to the great Kurdish people in Iraq.

So - if you define foreign policy as the totality of what makes you a conservative - I guess he and I are both conservatives - but one must not be a political ideologue but base their thinking and viewpoints based on rational thinking rather than being on the "left" or "right". After all, as atheists we are supposed to be rational and logical, right?

Hello Sassan. Nicely said. Explain, for me, if you don't mind: you say Hitch's voice resonates from the left and the right. I've heard his political standing is very conservative, (tell me if I'm wrong!), but I'm a lefty and he resonates with me. I think he's fabulous for speaking against religion.

I wish I could understand everything he writes; I was trying last night after he posted his 7/21 article about, (no surprise), Rupurt Murdoch.

Hi everyone - I just want to make a comment on Hitchens'. I hope he beats out this cancer so that he can live and keep entertaining us with his wit and intelligence - it goes without saying he is insanely intelligent and one of the greatest intellectuals to have ever graced this Earth - but he has stood on the right side of history against barbarism and Islamic fascism. We need you for the fight! Your voice is a voice that has resonated from the left and the right - Hitch is simply an inspiring human being.

@Indygrl76, the most fun is when Hitch goes on the Bill Maher program.  I had to drop HBO but hate not getting Maher.  One night Hitch came out with a drink in hand, looking like single malt scotch with a few ice cubes clinking it the glass.  He made no apologies, nor were any even hinted at by Maher, who simply observed that it was nice Hitchens brought his drink.  But as to Ms. Marcus Bachmann (I refuse to call her by anything but her Stepford name), the "help mate" to a bitterly homophobic suck on the federal tit, I can only refrain that wonderful line by the misanthropic, loquacious hitchhiker in "Five Easy Pieces."  After a long diatribe about all of her neuroses, she finishes with: "I don't want to talk about it."

@Paul B. G.: I hope it is pedigreed.  :-)

Hey, Indygrl76! Actually, Bachmann does it perfectly all by herself! The eloquent part is all Hitchens...
