I got adopted a dog a month and a half ago. As a tribute I named him Hitchens!

He had to cancel a speech at an atheist convention in Iowa last week because he had lost his voice. But he is still writing.

The debate was stunning simply because Hitchens would be actually taking part in the debate and directly refuting things that Dembski would say - and Dembski would go back to his notes and argue something Hitchens said in his book 5 years ago (that Dembski usually totally misconstrued). We were looking forward to seeing Hitchens tear someone up in person but he wasn't even worth the effort. But it was awesome to talk to him for a second :)

Yeah, it's pretty freaking pathetic how the best minds (of which Dembsky is sadly considered to be one) on the theistic side never really leave the realm of Arguments from Ignorance.

Scientists from the atheistic side actually go out into the world, measuring and studying things. What they have to say is valid.

Theologians go and study a 1,700 year old book, much of which has been proven to be blatantly false, and what remains is questionable. Until they go back and prove that the New Testament wasn't completely made up by Paul and a handful of others in the 1st Century CE (and the Pentateuch made up by the early Jewish invaders, to justify their actions), they can quote from the Bible all day long, and it doesn't mean a damned thing.

I've gone on 'homework assignments' from a few online friends of mine. They always want me to go to some small, evangelical church, where I'll truly feel the Spirit of the Lord, and ask the pastor to talk to me.

I'm always sadly disappointed, even beyond my already low expectations. I've never gotten anything beyond quoting the Bible at me (dude, I've already read the thing straight through; I know this stuff already), and when I ask why I should accept the Bible as any kind of evidence, they quote the verses that say how the Bible is the word of God and is infallible. It's so pathetic. Then, we generally end on a poorly-constructed Pascal's Wager. *sigh*

But, Mike, the amazing thing is that he was unaware it was going to be such a young audience and still is able to talk to them in terms they can understand, yet, as you will see, still just as powerfully as ever. Dr. Dembski bored ME - I'm sure the kids had an abysmal time trying to follow him.

Mr. Hitchens was in Dallas a week or so before the Munk debate and debated Dr. Stephen Demski (a sorely pathetic opponent) about whether a Good God exists. We were able to attend and shake Hitchens' hand which was super awesome, and I can report that he looked and sounded great.

It was a church/school that hosted it and there were kids as young as 7th grade present. Mr. Hitchens was surprised at the age of the main audience. They allowed "civilians" to come (pay and) watch as well, and there was a pretty decent (~100?) skeptic/atheist turn out.
