Thanks David for the info regarding Life of Brian. Definitely some interesting footnotes for us Python fans.

 

To throw a Python quote out there for you guys, "I don't think it should be blasphemy, just saying Jehova."

I took this while at the recent Protest The Pope march in London.

The Python Reference had me chuckling the entire way to Downing Street. When I saw the guy again I dashed over and begged him could I take a photo. He said yes, obviously...

Sorry to stem the flow of classic Pythonia, but a couple of points on Life of Brian. Those familiar with it will know it's relatively short. That's partly because the writers were a little unsure of what they could get away with.

A longish 'shepherds watch their flocks by night' sequence near the beginning was omitted for reasons of pacing. The story would have taken too long to get started.

There's also a longish 'Judean Liberation Front' suicide-squad scene which was meant to follow the Brian-at-the-window sequence. (The one with 'Are you a virgin, if it's not a personal question') It mentions various real ethic groups, religions and factions and was regarded as too politically sensitive even in that pre-9/11 time.

These sequences were shot and ended on the cutting room floor, but they can be viewed on YouTube or on the collectors' DVD edition, along with some interesting documentary footage of public reaction at the time and with hindsight, especially interesting to atheists.

The book of the film released at the time contained a complete script and various scrapbook material. One of these was a script sequence of Mary trying to explain to an indignant, disgusted Joseph how she became pregnant. It was edited out at quite an early stage, probably to avoid accusations of blasphemy (or at least soften them) by steering reasonably clear of Christ, who is very much a peripheral character and only in the early stages of the film.

I no longer have the book with this script and have tried to google it without success. Perhaps someone else may be more determined in tracking it down. It would be a worthwhile post here, as not so many are aware of it, while fans know the Python canon backwards.

I don't believe in FSM - it's for greaseballs and goombahs.

I still do the noodly dance when I go to the pizzeria, though. Better safe than sorry.
