A tip 4 ppl with issues like Craig's: Test the PSU voltages with a good multimeter, if all voltages are good, check the Mobo for bulging capacitors (the things that look like upside down miniature beer cans, if they are bulging or leaking brown liquid (often due to overheating or over-voltage) then your motherboard is faulty and likely it has also damaged CPU. Though replacing the mobo often fixes this, if one is available.  If you have 2 or more RAM modules, remove all except 1 and swap around, sometimes this will get a response, then RAM is likely the issue. If capacitors are okay and RAM swapping did not work, replace the lot, Mobo, CPU & RAM.  Because there is no way of telling which is faulty (even with expensive test equipment, you can get it wrong) and it is more likely to be accepted back under warranty.

New here, too.  Not an expert, but I rebuild my computer every couple of years.  I have a problem.  Desktop suddenly quit working.  Just shut down in an instant.  AMD chip, Asus board, 600-watt power supply.  Pressing the on button on the case did nothing.  Let it sit a couple of hours (other things to do), then hit the button.  Computer boots up, then shuts down, zap, half hour later.  The green power light on the board is on, but hitting the switch does nothing, no fans or drives come on, nothing happens.  Is it likely to be the ps, the chip, the board?  All the connections are tight, nothing unplugged.  Classic case of overheating?  Bad chip?  Clueless.  I was about to order a new chip and board, but thought I would beg here first.  Ideas?

New to this group.  Professionally I'm a translator (speak English, Spanish, French and Portuguese), but I'm also an aspiring FOSS hacker, Debian Gnu/Linux user, and Free Software supporter.  I develop websites (especially multilingual sites), as well, with html and css skills, learning php and javascript, jquery, etc., pretty handy with joomla and wordpress. I write software primarily in tcl/tk, but also a bit of python, perl, bash, etc.  I've used gnu/linux for a decade, but still consider that I'm hardly an expert. There's always more to learn.
