Eat Fruit, be healthy

A Burden of Disease study that looks at morbidity and mortality worldwide had a surprising finding.

In charting risk factors, the researchers found that diets low in fruit were responsible for more disease than obesity or physical inactivity. That conclusion was reached through analysis of the health effects of various components of diet and the number of people consuming diets high or low in those components.

“We were very surprised,” Murray said of the fruit finding. “I’m a pretty profound diet skeptic. But the evidence on diet is as convincing as on obesity.” [emphasis mine]

I guess I should eat more fruit.

Eating more fruit sounds like a good idea, and I am going to try to eat more, however, most store purchased fruit is expensive and tasteless. I buy some just because I know it's good for me, but I don't enjoy eating it.

My space for a garden is limited, so I can't grow all I want. I now have 50% of my garden in fruit, and plan on increasing that to 80% in the next 2 years, but that's still not enough.

I grow pears and freeze them, so I do eat frozen pears during the winter. I had an apricot tree and 4 cherry trees for several years, but the apricot and 2 cherries died, and I'm thinking of taking down the last 2 cherry trees because they're unhealthy and it's a loosing battle fighting the fruit flies. That will give me more room for fruit that is easier to grow and harvest.
