Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Great news!

Just wanted to report that I got a letter in the mail today, and it said all the samples they took when they did my upper-endoscopy were benign.  So!  One less thing to worry about! :)

Joan, I usually ride on the road with my recumbent trike for several reasons.  One, there's less snow and ice on the road.  Two, the road is less bumpy than the sidewalks.

Three, when riding on the sidewalk, I don't like stopping at each intersection, and waiting for all traffic to disappear before I go again.  When riding on the road, I actually feel safer, because cars can see me better.

My ride to work was uphill but was at 6AM, so not much traffic.  My ride home was downhill, so I could keep up with traffic, and rode fully in the roadway just like a car.  Again, I was more visible that way.  I increase my visibility by having a multicolored twirling windsock type of thing on a pole.

My trike does well on ice as long as I didn't push too hard, and it does well with snow, which is usually less than an inch.

With a trike, the 3 wheels means you won't fall over if you slip on ice or snow (or gravel).

I've only fallen over twice.  Both times were when I was learning and turned corners too sharp and fast.  It happened on dry pavement when there was enough friction to keep my tires from skidding.

GC - you reminded me of Woody Allen's crack that if there is a god, he must be an underachiever.

It's our BS-detector, Randall.  "innocent" also irritates me - should I be overjoyed when someone dies who is not innocent? Innocent of what?

Comment by Randall Smith on August 28, 2014 at 6:55am

When I read or hear about "innocent" people being killed (or whatever), I often transfer my sad feelings to a rationalized expression of "See--what kind of god would allow such a thing to happen? Ha. Showed you." I'm not proud of feeling that way, but it helps deaden the sadness.

Here's another fun song:

I found a whole slew of Atheist songs on YouTube...don't know why I never looked for any till tonight.

Grinner, I am SO Mac illiterate that I don't know how to do anything but look at my own ugly face on the screen, and click icons just to see what happens.

I NEED to learn to use that Mac because this Dell is 10 years old, slowing down, and crashes or freezes at least 4 times a day.  I actually do two small jobs via the net...I don't get paid for them, but it's something to keep me busy for one week a month.

I'm effing BORED!

When everyone was talking about swearing, I realized that I don't "swear" at all, I just cuss (use dirty words).  I'll say "ohhhhhh sh*t" and the F-word occasionally, but my hyper-religious sister is the one who says "godammit" when she drops a spoon or something equally trivial. I think Homer Simpson is her role model since she has Asperger's Syndrome, and doesn't really understand how real humans behave.  She will be 70 in November....

I found a couple of shortened versions of Dan Barker's atheist songs on YouTube (Hallelujah!  *snicker*)

The good but quite limited god Harold Kushner posits in When Bad Things Happen to Good People, who's just as outraged as we are over tragedies and injustice, makes much more sense than the traditional version. (Then again, people here would agree that any god is imaginary and unnecessary.)

Kushner, a rabbi who had a traditional view of God, was moved to rethink his beliefs when his son died of progeria, literally dying of old age in his teens. He absolutely rejects "mysterious plans" bullshit as profoundly immoral.

(The "moral supporter" sort of god Kushner came to believe in reminds me somewhat of the idea of "avatars" I read about somewhere else: characters -- like Lady Liberty, Santa Claus, or the Geico gecko -- who exist only in our cultural consciousness, but who, unlike those examples, speak and advocate for the well-being of all of humanity, and know they're fictional.)

When Bad Things Happen to Good People might be worth recommending to all those Facebook theists!
