Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

I remember we collected drinking glasses from the gas station.

I remember banks giving gifts.  I notice some still will give $100 for putting so much in and leaving it there for a certain period.

I've been tempted, but it's too much trouble, especially because I like my credit union.  I've been a member of a credit union since I started making money.  They don't cost as much as a bank and give more in interest.  Never used a bank.

Felaine, that's hilarious.  Looks like something from Monty Python.

Speaking of gas stations, remember when they used to give out premiums and gifts, like banks used to?  I know that one of our Xmas music records, a wonderful Julie Andrews album acquired in the 60's, was from a gas station promoted by Firestone.

I also remember my grandmother moving her money around to different banks so she could get the free gift.  Blenders, fans, and little household gadgets.

Carl, neat hobby!

Joan, I'll wait for a rainy day to peruse the site you suggested. I used to live in S. Cal.

Spud, remember when a "self-serve" filling station was a good way to save money? Not any longer. We're being ripped off.

And I love the poster humor!

Chris, thanks for the Shorpy link.  What a great site!  That's right up my alley.  I love those old photos.  I have my Chicago postcard collection with cards from 1898 through the 1940's.  So many of the postcards from the "turn of the century" are just like the street scenes in those photos of LA and from the Shorpy website.

I have somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 cards exclusively of Chicago.  It's my ambitious project to one day have them all posted (front & back) and categorized on a personal website for all to enjoy.  My collection is quite extensive, so I've basically stopped acquiring additional cards unless I come across something that is so extraordinary or rare.

Those LA photos are beautiful! Do you know Shorpy? http://www.shorpy.com/

And thanks for the cartoons! Saved and to be used in lessons!
