TFA, you've touched a pleasure-nerve. Radio! Not having a TV, that was our entertainment. Sunday afternoons, just after dinner, was comedy hour. The greats of the 50s repeated: "The Goon Show" and "Hancock's Half Hour" are the ones I remember most. Then the current crop of the 60s with "Round the Horne" and "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again" being the most memorable. "The Navy Lark" ran from 1959 until 1975, changing style with the years. For those who don't know it, the Goon Show was a revolution in radio and comedy. The Monty Python team have often said "no Goons - no Python" so it inspired a generation.

The most serendipidous discovery I made when I first got a PC 5 years ago was BBC Radio 4 Extra, where they are all repeated. The best of them haven't aged at all and I usually have a weekly session of loud, neighbour-disturbing laughter. Such joy!

Flying A, get an electric toothbrush.  The biggest problem with teeth is gums and the electric toothbrush is the best for gums.  Use it for about six months prior to going to the dentist to get everything healthy again.  This might save you some gum treatment.

The Flying Atheist, skipping regular dental cleaning doesn't make you a bad person, it only raises your risk of mortality. There are lists of the most critical things you can do to avoid dying prematurely, like hire someone else to climb a ladder to clean your gutters (so you don't fall off). Keeping your teeth and gums healthy is right near the top of the list. Bacteria you never notice in your gumline can "get loose" and infect your heart. BTW, I did not see that walking stick till the third time I looked.

Yes, sk8eycat, the horrors of metal on metal joints has been newsworthy for months.

Ian, that Satanic Leaf Gecko will inspire a horror movie. Those red eyes and sharp features *shudder*.

Steph, I would not want to wake up with that cat staring in my face. I'd leap out of bed screaming and hit the wall or something.

Wow!!!  I leave town and I'm seven pages behind upon my return.  Finally caught up. 

Felaine, I'm glad your tooth pain went away and that you're back to 'normal.'  I'm very embarrassed to admit this, but I haven't been to a dentist in nine years.  That's really bad, I know.  I haven't had any problems, but I know I'm long overdue for a regular checkup, etc.  I pay a very low insurance premium for dental care every year through work, so there's no excuse.  Just me being a very bad and irresponsible person.

Joan, I enjoyed you reminiscing about days gone by.  I still remember "telephone exchanges."  My childhood home phone exchange was TU9 (Tuxedo 9) or today known as 889.  You also mentioned Amos and Andy.  They are a favorite of mine as well, as are many of the old radio shows.  I listen almost daily to them.  I sometimes feel as though I was born a few decades too late.  You might enjoy the following links that I use all the time:  Amos & Andy audio page 1, Amos & Andy audio page 2 and Old Time Radio archive.

Ian, I love the Satanic Gecko.  Nature never fails to amaze and 'wow' me.  I've always been fascinated with the walking stick insects.

Oh, and I too signed the DST petition.  Changing clocks twice a year may have been necessary in the bygone farming era of pre-industrialization, but it's just not relative to today's modern society......kinda like religion.

I have a question for everybody/anybody: my friend that I cat-sit for v occasionally needs a hip replacement job, and has asked me to research what works best, what lasts longest, and everything else about hip prosthese.  Where do I start?  Has anyone had any experience with this problem?

What I've come up so far is the lawsuit settlement by Johnson & Johnson for their faulty metal-on-metal device. Metal-on-metal doesn't last long...and constantly sheds teeny-tiny fragments into the body. (But all the materials used in these devices does that.)

I've also sent an e-mail to a friend who has had to have the same hip operated on 3 times because of various screw-ups.  I haven't told Sue about that.

Anyroad, any information at all would be greatly appreciated.  I just need to know where to start...a lot of the links that come up on Google and other search engines are paid ads, and I'm trying to avoid those.

Oh, yes.  Our "Pale Blue Dot" in space.  Her biggest problem for the past 2,000 years or so is that the two most powerful organizations have convinced (without any evidence at all) billions and billions of people that there's a better home waiting for them...after they die.  So they leave this one filled with trash.
