Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

@ Tony & Steph:Speaking of talking... "Deep within the heart of every evangelist lies the wreck of a car salesman." H.L. Mencken

You can actually buy a T-shirt with that on it...or other Mencken quotes.

I just found this site, and I think I wanna get the entire collection.  But I LOVE the one about the car salesman.  Jerry Falwell never got rid of that part of his personality.

sk8eycat, Perfect quotes! Re-posting!

Just picked-up my son's 17-year old friend from the airport.  Found out he is an Atheist.  We started talking, and he disagreed with me totally when I told him my 92 year-old (when he died) grandfathers fav saying was that religion was the scourge of the Earth.  His mom is Catholic, his Dad is muslim.  Disagreed that if there was a 'god', it was good for people to fall down and get hurt, (physically and mentally), because there is a lesson in that.  I said if I were a 'god', I wouldn't let my children get hurt to teach them a lesson, etc., etc.  I said what about little kids with cancer?  He agreed there was no lesson in that.  He said he's thought all this through long and hard.  Okay, but I'm 45 and he's 17 and my Mom was with us (also an Atheist), and she's 69.  With age comes more wisdom (usually, ha ha),  I don't know, just kinda hit me the wrong way.  Maybe it's because his parents are religious he 'defends' religion in a way?

booklover, that is an interesting twist, "Found out he is an Atheist." and ..."he disagreed with me totally when I told him my 92 year-old (when he died) grandfathers fav saying was that religion was the scourge of the Earth."

I wonder what part of atheist he doesn't understand? You all shall be having an interesting visit, I am sure.

Hi, y'all!  I've been off-line about 24 hours...my sister was surfing around yesterday and did something that let a couple of horses in here.  I just got rid of them...by MYSELF!  I'm so relieved, and got such a kick calling my tech friend and telling him "Never mind!" (Actually we thoroughly discussed the results of my last scan, and he said I'm safe.)

Why to people DO that?  Write viruses, worms, etc...I mean.  To steal information?  Because they like to cause damage?  I don't get it.

Steph: I wuvz dat ORNJ kitteh!  Mai favrit flaver!  An hiz cattitude reminz me ob mai own docter.  Dr. BadJokes.

booklover: The kid is way too young to have it all figured out yet.  He probably thinks he does, but he's got a long way to grow. Do you have any good books you can lend him while he's visiting? Dan Barker's Godless is one that I've worn out because I look things up so often, and it's not written in Academish.  Or do you have the DVD of Julia Sweeney's play "Letting Go of God"?  Doing that takes time...most adults who were raised in a religious family usually say it took them from five to ten years to realize they can't believe in a god.  (If you don't have the DVD, maybe your local library does.)

Sorry about your issues, sk8eycat.

I agree with you on the 17 yo.  I didn't really know who I was until I was in my late 20s.  I was too influenced to have my own mind.  It does take time.

thanks for your comments everyone!  Yes, I do have books to loan and or recommend for him sk8eycat, but I have already found that he won't really listen.  He has Asperger's and is VERY smart, but then also seems to tend to think (in my opinion) that he is SO smart, he knows everything.  I think he thinks his opinions are correct and that's that!  I don't think I'll talk to him about Atheism anymore.  I'm not going to argue with a kid who thinks he has all the answers and won't listen to those of a fairly intelligent adult who has been around a lot longer than he has and has learned much more about Atheism ( he hasn't even been an Atheist is whole short life).  It gets my blood-pressure up, lol.  He said that much religion is good, and that if the world was all Atheist there would be chaos and no morals.  I told him about all the great people here on AN, and he condescendingly said "well of course because you have a little community there and that makes people good and care about each other".  what?  whatever! lol~ Melinda

booklover, I agree with everyone, that a 17 year-old has a lot to learn.   That one seems especially egotistical, and I also wouldn't want to talk to him anymore.

sk8eycat, thanks for the excellent quotes.

Steph S., Dr Morris is a little scary.

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 5 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
