Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Sorry you have to put-up with another Aaaarrgghhh! day Melinda.

Spud, glad you like the cat pics!

Ian, so sorry about your Mom.  I have had close relatives on both sides of my family with dementia, so I am not unfamiliar with it.  It is hard.  I will be thinking of you.  Come here to talk whenever you need to!!

Carl, I love that you called Chris "girlfriend" after all of our explanations of the meaning! lol.  So jealous you got to go to the Netherlands!  I have never heard of the Gay Games.  I just asked my daughter, who is bi-sexual, ( and I did ask her permission before I put that on here) if she had ever heard of them, and she hadn't.

I know I am not good with punctuation.  I should try harder.  My daughter was the copy-editor of her high school newspaper, and is a Journalism major.

Where's Tony?  Probably working hard this week like Steph!

I had another not-feeling-good day. Aaaarrgghhh! I am so tired of this.  I need to learn to just deal with it, as this is how I will feel until they find a different med, or treatment, or whatever.  Some people have worse situations!

Have a relaxing evening friends~ Melinda

Grammar and spelling is sometimes a problem for me, mainly because I get in a hurry and don't spend enough time proofreading.  I think it was yesterday that I posted something on AN, and used the word "too" instead of "to".  It was embarrassing because I almost never make that mistake, but I left it because I didn't want my post showing-up in people's mail-boxes more than once.  I don't know which is worse.

Joan, you said "what are friends for" and changed it to "for what are friends".  I use the first phrasing all the time and it seems every one does.  I didn't even know it was technically incorrect.  The second phrase sounds strange to me.

The Flying Atheist, my son-in-law puts nothing on Facebook that is true . I don't know if that works, or not.
I am on Facebook because my children and grandchildren use it. I have a wee bit of a problem because they like to play games, which I do not; they put in stuff like "I got up." and I just fly by those kinds of comments. Every once in a while they write something of substance or of importance to them and I feel honored to be a part of their lives.

I don't care for idle chatter, but everybody on this site has something to say or share or questions or answers to something. I leave my keyboard feeling enriched and enlightened. Mostly, I like everyone here.

sk8eycat, you accentuate a problem I am having and on which I am working. Grammar! I lose track of my verbs and fail to see them when I proof read. I find it only after I press "ADD Comment" or a few days later. Dang!. I will not be offended if anyone wants to take the time to correct me. I know, it is my job to do. But what are friends for. 0000ppppsss. But for what are friends?

That Dutchman definitely put his money where his idiocy was.

Steph: I forgot to tell you I yelled "AWWWW!" at the kittehs you posted.  How dull life would be without them.

Chris: I'm among the group who never would have known that English was not your native language if you hadn't told us.  (It's embarassing to me that so many native English-speakers who post on forums and comment on news sites can't spell, punctuate, or use correct grammar....unless they are using rude 4-letter words. They never have any problems spelling those.)

I wanted to add that some terms for friends are cultural...or started out that way.  "Bro" (for "brother") is used by males who want to indicate a close friend, but still appear "cool."

Between women, "Girl-FRIEND!" is a joyful shout, with the "friend" part pitched a little higher than "girl."  Or just "girrrrrrl!"  Usually meaning agreement, or endearment. And "sister-girl" has sort of the same meaning of close friendship.  All these originated in the black communities, but I hear them elsewhere now.  I like the warmth that they imply, but you have to be careful who you say them to....you need know you've have been accepted as a very close friend.  Actually, somebody has to call you "Girl-FRIEND" or "Sister-girl" first.

"Bro" is usually only spoken between males.

Chris, I looked up Geert Wilders and read a bit about him. Your description of the people with whom you work I assume some are Muslim. You wrote, "most people just want to be good neighbours, meet good neighbours and lead a quiet life." has been my experience as well. Radical fundamentalism and proselytizing by any group creates distortions while living at peace as good neighbors doesn't get the press.

The risks of standing against Islam's practices and principles can be deadly; The murder of Theo van Gogh and threats to Ayaan Hirsi Ali because of their film criticizing treatment of women in Islam, and Salman Rushdie's Satic Verses, for example.

I wonder if it is possible to gather together Atheists, Christians, Jews, and Palestinians, Hindus, Buddhists, Humanists, etc. in an attempt to find common ground, identify our differences, and figure out if we can live together in peace and justice?

Ian, welcome back.  I'm glad you were finally able to get to England to see your mother and to take care of some family obligations.  I know it must be a terrible strain to have such a distance between you and another family member when they need you.

You're right.  You will find much to smile at back here with us.  Cheers!  --Carl
