Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Actually Chris your English is so good that I forget it's not your first language!  Also the way I used the word girlfriend was sort-of slang I think.  I think being able to speak or write more than one language is wonderful!~ Melinda

Hi Booklover, don't be sorry! Apart from wanting to meet kind people without imaginary friends, like yourself, I come here to improve my English - I imagine that it's a bit stiff and perhaps just out of touch. But I don't worry about it: I can use it well enough. Is anyone learning Dutch?

Oh! lol, sorry Chris!  It just means what Carl said.  Like "Hey there friend", but only from a female friend to another female friend.  Carl is right, a guy would never say "Hey boyfriend!" to another guy just as a friend.

Steph, really cute lol cats!  Great poster Felaine!  Hope you got some sleep Carl.

Have a great week everyone~ Melinda

Good morning, Chris.  I'm up late here suffering with a little bit of insomnia.  Regarding your question:  yes, it is true that the terms boyfriend and girlfriend are used in referencing a lover, as when two people are dating or are romantically involved.

However, for females, the term 'girlfriend(s)' is also commonly used to describe acquaintances that are friends only and not lovers.  Example: "She spent a fun day out at the museum with her girlfriend(s)."  In this instance, the term 'girlfriend' is commonly used in both the singular and the plural forms in describing two female friends or even a group of female friends.

For males, the term boyfriend is not commonly used in this manner, as your textbook states.  You generally do not hear a male say that he is meeting his boyfriends after work for dinner and a movie.  He is just meeting his friends, or his buddies, or his pals, etc.  (I guess it's kind of a macho/sexist "guy" thing.)  Of course, in the gay male community, the term 'girlfriend' is carelessly thrown about while speaking with, about, or describing other gay males.

I hope this helps explain our quirky language.

Question: I teach English to elderly people - nice to do, yes - but it's not as if I know so very much about English. One of the books I use says that ´boyfriend´ and ´girlfriend´ are strictly used for lovers, not for friends. So when I hear Booklover say girlfriend to Steph, I don't want to pry but I do want to know about your use of the language. Tell me more!

Oh hey Melinda - I noticed you asked about me. I've been busy getting the final grades entered and studying for finals. It's always so busy about this time. Thanks for asking about me. I appreciate it.
