Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

I'm sorry about your Aunt, Jessica.  If you have to go to the funeral, you don't need a poker-face.  Just maybe think about good times you had with your Aunt, or something else nice, and try to ignore the preacher.  I've never  been to a baptist church , so I don't know what the funerals are like.  Maybe hard to ignore!  ~ Melinda

My Aunt Wanda died last night.  She was a tough woman who did not even let polio slow her down.  Her daughter died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 18.  She had been in the hospital several times this last year but she kept recovering.  However, she was 92 and it was just a matter of time.  She was also a fundie so I know the funeral will be at the church she went to, a baptist church.  Soooo, I am going to have to sit in that church and listen to jesus this, gawd that.  It makes me extremely uncomfortable and if it wasn't for my grandmother I probably would for go the funeral and just go to the funeral home.  I am dreading it bc I do not have a poker face.  Any time I have had to go to church funerals I always make faces (unintentionally) when the preachers say ridiculous things.  I needed some where to share this, I hate baptists churches and their bs.

I got home about 2 hours ago (we stopped at a nice restaurant for dinner), and I'm still speechless.  Most of the songs were written by Sir elton John, but the number that blew me away was set to "Swan Lake."  I'm still breathless, too.

So many memories...

Thank you, I am feeling better finally.  It was a nasty virus and I won!  My mother is agnostic but she does not like me telling people i'm an atheist.  She is 58 I am sure the whole communism time really affected her as well. However, she is not afraid to tell people she is agnostic, double-standard. I'm going to print that out and give it to her.  I've been working on helping her become an atheist so I send her links to the different atheist sites if I see something that might make her go "hmmm."

Ask them, or whoever shows up next, if they believe in Santa Claus (or Zeus, or Oberon, or any fictional character you can think of), and when they say, "no," tell them they are a-Santa-ists.  They are theists, and you are an a-theist.  It's really a simple little word, with no sinister connotations.  They probably won't accept that, but maybe, just maybe, you'll give them something to think about later on.

Go to the FFRF web site, and look up their non-tracts; I think there's one about "Myths About Atheism," or something like that.  You can print out a copy or three, and hand it to the next buybull-pusher that annoys you.  And give a copy to your mother, too.

My mother was a bit of a fundie (raised in Oklahoma), and was mildly upset when I told her Genesis was wrong about everything, but she also was too curious about the natual world to not read popular articles about geology, anthropology, archaeology, and other sciences.  She never gave up on god altogether, but I remember how she was glued to the TV with the rest of us when Neil Armstrong first stepped onto the surface of the Moon.  She couldn't help having a mind, and using it.

I miss her.

PS: I hope you're feeling better.

I NEED TO BRAG!

In about 2 hours, I'm leaving to go see "Billy Elliot - The Musical" with some friends.  I haven't been to a live show in about 30 or 40 years, and I'm so excited that I'm jumping out of my skin.  I love musicals, always have, and this one has received wonderful reviews from even the most cynical critics.....  Cheering, laughing and crying all at the same time.

I'll let y'all know if I survive the experience.

Jessica: "Atheist" was not a "dirty" word until the 1950s when the USA was overwhelmed with McCarthyism and paranoid fear of the Soviet Union.  The loud-mouthed conservatives equated a lack of religious faith with communism (even though the earliest xians lived in communes and shared everything...monks and nuns still do) and the "godless communist" shibboleth stuck.

I like to mess with doorbell-ringers, too, but it's kinds difficult to do that when my sister is home because she's one of them.  A JW, I mean.  We have a silent truce...we don't discuss religion.  Ever.

The people at the Freedom From Religion Foundation (and other non-believers like Richard Dawkins) have been trying to take the stigma off the word for years, but I have a feeling that people won't let go of the "devil-worshipping, godless commies" idea unthil those of us who were raised during the Cold War are long gone.

Buy a "This is What an Atheist Looks Like" T-shirt, and wear it proudly!  (I haven't bought one yet because when I look at my 72-year-old face in a mirror, I shudder.)
