Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.
Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.
Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.
This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.
A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.
Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

But, the nit-picker in me wants to say that I hear smell is the most important part of taste, so there you go.
Comment by Ian Mason on April 9, 2013 at 12:03pm Summer holiday (part 1) now booked. One week on Crete, the first week of June so the weather is not too hot. Part 2 will, I hope, be Greenland in August to run a ½-marathon but the date for the run hasn't been confirmed yet. I've been there before and taken part in the run spent a week in the capital, Nuuk. This time I'd like to see more of the country.
Well I was excused from jury duty - I am glad because it was a Capitol Murder Trial seeking the Death penalty.
I just approached the bench and explained to the judge that I was enrolled and paid for summer classes.
Anyway, everything is back to normal.

Comment by Pat on April 9, 2013 at 12:57pm Steph, please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not glad you got excused. I do a fair number of jury trials, and oftentimes, we are let with a selection of jurors who are retired and and don't mind doing something that simply gets them out of the house, are unemployed and have no intention of getting a job, or can't wait to find someone guilty because they perceive themselves as the "law and order" type.
Juries need people like you. Smart, logical, compassionate, and a willingness to listen to consider all points of view before you make up you mind. In the "for what it's worth" category, and in the interest of getting a fair trial, I'd have kept you on.

Comment by The Flying Atheist on April 9, 2013 at 1:33pm Pat, I've had all positive experiences on jury duty and with dealing with my fellow jurors. Always a varied group of ages, races, employment/non-employment, backgrounds, etc., etc. If I were in legal trouble but innocent, I would definitely feel more assured having a trial by jury. Yes, Steph, the legal system could always use more people like you, but I totally understand your obligation to your education and the money already spent for it. Maybe next time!
Comment by Ian Mason on April 9, 2013 at 3:00pm Glad to hear that you avoided that grotesque dilema, Steph. Deciding if another person should live or die is an offence against humanity.
Pretty kitty-cuddles :-)
Comment by The Flying Atheist on April 9, 2013 at 3:16pm Luckily we have a moratorium on the death penalty here in Illinois.....thanks to our former Republican governor, George Ryan, who was convicted on corruption charges, served five years in prison and is now serving the balance of his sentence in home confinement. Gotta love politics! At least I can respect him for his views on the death penalty, gay rights, abortion, and other social issues. He was quite a liberal Republican and one of the very few Republicans I have actually voted for.

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
