Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

Let's not define ourselves or others by our worst behaviors

My take on the recent melt down at Hang With Friends, of which I missed part, is that some of us were tripped up by a habit of thought. It's something we learn growing up, and use without realizing how much pain it can generate -  failing to…Continue

Cary woke me at 5:00 AM this morning and the temperature was 85 degrees F. I have never felt a morning like that in Spokane before. I used to feel them when we lived in Texas. I worked about four hours and came in exhausted.

Laura, Larry, Michelle and Jared are all geared up to move as soon as a call comes into about any fire. They volunteer and go out on called all hours of the night and day, 365 days a year. Jacob, the 16-year-old is now able to go on fire calls but is restricted about what he is able to do. They all have full time jobs to tend to, but leave for their various duties.

Wenatchee is in the midst of a terrible fire now.

Carl, I like your new avatar! Very handsome indeed! I am relieved to learn that your federal assistance comes in for you.

I like the idea of no badges and no tiered access to information. You offer a good idea about contacting Richard and appreciate that you are willing to do it.

Pat, that's such a great movie!  One of Humphrey Bogart's many classics.  The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)......in case anyone was interested.

I like your suggestion of having the badges display optional.  Perhaps I could get a note off to Richard about this conversation.  It's only been discussed here in Hang With Friends, as far as I know.  I'm curious what the rest of the users on this website have to say.

Sign me up to get rid of the badges. "Badges? BADGES? I don't need no stinking badges!

Seriously, at least make the display optional. For those who want to advertise their donations (not me), great. They should have the option. And for those that don't, they should have the option of removing it from their avatar.

I'll also "vote" to do without the badges.

Carl, well stated. I know we can't give to every hand thrust in our face. I continue to support about 15 "causes", averaging $30 per. Fortunately, I can afford it. And it makes me feel good.

However, I wish to remain "anonymous" about who and how much. One can't help but notice the who and how much here at A/N. I say to myself, "I wonder why he/she hasn't supported this site". I say to "Brother Richard", please remove the insignia.

Carl, special rooms and special privileges does not sound like a good thing to me either.

There is probably no perfect answer to supporting Atheist Nexus, but I wonder if drawing for a prize is legal.  That might be better than special people.

Randy, I tend to agree with your sentiment about donation recognition.  I didn't donate to get a badge.

Last year, prior to being approved for federal disability insurance, my financial future was quite precarious.  Without even asking, members here on AtheistNexus began pledging financial support if I needed it.  I was humbled and very moved by those offers.

Luckily, my federal assistance came through, so obtaining financial help from individuals here was not necessary.  When Brother Richard sent out his recent request for donations, I strongly felt the need to support a community that was so supportive of me.  AtheistNexus is a very important community for me, and I wish to see it continue.  Making a $30 yearly pledge seemed very reasonable to me.

I totally understand that even $30 may not be available in the budgets of many of our members.  I know.  I've been in that situation more times than I ever expected.  If I was able, I would donate for everyone on their behalf.

I guess this brings me to my final point.  Brother Richard has alluded to idea of having special rooms and special privileges for paying members.  To be honest, I am against any type of tiered system for members based on anything financial.  Everyone here is too important for the cohesion of our community to be dismissed from participation.

I understand that running this website costs money, and I agree that Brother Richard should not have to pay for it solely.  If additional monies are needed, a general fundraising call should go out with a requested goal.  It's been two years since the last donation request.  Although I'm not privy to all the financial details which Brother Richard is dealing with, the fundraising method used two years ago seemed to work, without the badges of recognition.

Ian, nothing like getting away to restore the "soul" (or whatever).

I don't like that star on my avatar. I didn't ask for recognition. Besides, it's obstructive.
