Descartes had a tragic failure of nerve toward the end of his life. He made a wager. It fudged when it came to whether one was a believer or a freethinker. The wager posited that nothing was to be lost by belief in an afterlife in heaven or hell, for if one bets against its likelihood, one might in fact condemn oneself to Hades. I call that chickenshit.
