Hey Mike, I enjoyed our talk last week at the Amuse Wine Bar, and I think you’re absolutely right; our PR problem in part is that non-atheists are defining what it means to be an atheist. We both used to use the term “radical atheist”, but like I mentioned about that YouTube video that pointed out.

Radical Christian: shoots doctors, harasses families of fallen service members.
Radical Muslim: suicide bomber, flies planes into buildings.
Radical Atheist: writes books, gives lectures, files lawsuits.

They use the label “Radical” to marginalize what the atheist community has to say, we defiantly need to take control of how we are defined.

I also agree that atheism is a statement of what we don’t believe in and that humanism could be a statement of what we do believe in, I’d like to talk about that one more.

Oahu gang, I’m still thinking about the best way to coordinate our next get together, any suggestions? I’m seriously looking at using as an extension of our group, because the site is made to coordinate get together, please check out “” and let me know what do you guys think?

Just got into Hilo today. Forgot what it's like to be somewhere hot and humid. 82º at 10 PM? Why did my fan have to break!?

I'd like to Calvin, but I have martial arts training on Mondays and Wednesday after work. Still, if you guys plan on meeting up at another time or date, let me know.

Some people from the Hawaii group should get on the Atheist Nexus chat (the one at the very bottom of the site, not the ones from the top chat menu). There tends to be a lot of the same people there every day, with not a lot of new.

I should be able to make it.

Oahu gang,

Mike, Aaron and I are trying to coordinate a get together after work Monday 17 Aug for some conversation and wine tasting at Amuse Wine Bar in the Honolulu Design Center. If any of you guys are available, come join us. I should be there by 6:00 pm.

Hey Mike, I’m a firm believer in activism as a force that can change things for the better, but I also totally agree with you, we defiantly need to choose our battles carefully. Realistically atheists in Hawaii have no organization they could rally to; activism at this time would probably not be that good an idea.

Thank goodness that Armen started this group; at least we atheists in Hawaii can start a social network. After seeing the people waiting for an atheist group to start on “meet up” I was tempted to start a group right there, but I realized quickly that I wouldn’t be able to manage a meet up group with my work schedule. I did however sign up with a dining out meet up group for next month, I’m such a nerd.

Although I’ve never called myself a Humanist, I could defiantly support the Humanism agenda. We can talk about it later when we go out for some drinks. I start back on days next week, no more life of a vampire, anyone interested in joining Mike and I for some wine after work?

You know if several of us volunteered to help manage a meet up group, we could actually start an atheist meet up group as a social extension of this Atheist Nexus group, (Mad Scientist laughter Ha! Ha! And all the atheists will come together!) Just a thought…

The closest things to a Hawaii atheists organization that I have been able to find are Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of State and Church ( and Humanists Hawaii ( Both of these seem to be inactive now.

HCSC was pretty active politically some years back. Now they seem to be deferring to ACLU to carry the fight. I'm not so sure about HH.

Are any of us interested in Humanism and political activisim? I am definitely interested in Humanism. I think it provides a very sound answer to those who fear the ethical void they believe would occur if most people stopped being religious. HH could probably be revived if enough of us took an interest.

Political activism is a much more risky activity. I'm not necessarily against it, but I do think that battles should be chosen carefully and waged carefully.

Hey gang, after talking to Kaimana I went looking for some local Hawaii atheists organizations I could recommend for him to join, but guess what gang! We don’t have any official atheist organization in Hawaii! How sad is that… I Googled it, I check with the national atheist organizations, MAAF linked me to a “meet up” site, where he said that’s some Hawaii atheists had contacted him from. So I when to the meet up site and found more Hawaii atheists looking for a group. I sent them e-mail invites to check us out here so we maybe getting a few more people. Our site here maybe the only game in town for local atheist, it’s kind of unreal that there are no official atheist organizations here?

I'm quite the lonely Atheist in Hawaii. Nice to see there's a Hawaii group.
