Joan, that is truly wonderful news!! And a wonderful name too! I would love to invite you to also add the news to the Cycle of Life page, as a happy event!

Today I bud grafted some cherries and plums.  I wanted to convert 2 non-productive cherry trees into ones that we like, so I grafted buds.  If they take, next year I can cut the original branches back to the buds, then the buds grow and it's the new variety.    I also added 2 more varieties of Asian plum to a mature, nonproductive Asian plum tree, as pollinating varieties and to get those plums, and because I can.

These are the grafts I did on the same tree in June.  Grafting is really very easy once you get over the unknowns and read about it or take a class.

Hurrah, Joan! My farmer daughter's name is Emily Grace, named after my grandmother. All four of my kids included family names. I think it's a neat tradition. To some extent, they have followed suit.

Something to do with breast feeding, perhaps? I knew a woman who was appalled at the diaper stench of her baby after she stopped breast feeding.

Congrats Joan.
I would love to smell her!! There is nothing like that new baby smell. Have you ever noticed it goes away at about six months.

Here's what's coming out of my garden onto my plate: sweet corn, grean beans, peas, kale, collards, chard, lettuce (getting bitter and going to seed), cucumbers, summer squash, carrots, onions, new potatoes, and all kinds of herbs, like dill and cilantro and chives. It's really overwhelming. Oh yes, brocolli and cabbage, too!

Any news of your granddaughter, Joan?

Randall, I too have a new puppy. It's been years and I had forgotten how much time and effort they take -  and how much damage they can do when they chew! She is a sweetheart and will be a great companion for Rio once she matures a little.

When I first started to plant things I decided I would make an effort to buy non-Monsanto seeds, and when I bought existing plants they wouldn't end up killing the bees I was hoping to attract.  The link I posted is the first extensive list I have found of Monsanto seeds. Glad it is of use to someone.

Joan, I finally mowed my dichondra for the first time yesterday and I have to admit it looks pretty good.  My walkway looks as if it has been around for years instead of just months. :)  There are few spots that have yet to fill in, but for the most part there is a tight carpet of little green leaves that are soft when I step on them.

My zinnias wound up with the nasty powdery mildew which I have to admit was alot my fault as I didn't want to thin them properly as they were so pretty.  I pretty much decimated the bed cutting out all the ones with mildew. :(  Lesson learned: air circulation in hot and humid climate is important.

Also the native vines I bought online have really taken off and the Fuzzy Bean is blooming tiny delicate pink blooms!

Thanks for the list Barbara.
