Spud,

It's a long story.  I haven't eaten meat for over 30 years.  Not eating sentient beings is part of it.  But I never proselytize, it's just my choice.  I love food.  I don't eat fish either.  Or bivalves, even tho I don't think they are sentient.    It just is what it is.

Sentient, if you don't mind me asking, are you a vegetarian because you don't want to eat any sentient beings?

Comment by Idaho Spud on December 8, 2012 at 9:46am

"lowest of all on the food chain."  That's funny.  Do you eat fish?

Comment by Sentient Biped on December 8, 2012 at 9:00am

Spud, yes you are right.  My partner is not vegetarian, however.  Neither are the dogs or cat.  Or for that matter, the chickens.  I'm the lowest of all on the food chain.

It sounds like you're a vegetarian that eats eggs.  Is that correct Sentient?  Do you also drink milk?

Future, impressive cat house!  A true castle!

Joan, the ducks are one of those things that I always think "some day".  You are right, they are something to do in retirement.  A lot of things become routine (like the chickens) and once established just need a little puttering.  For me puttering is meditation.  Planting trees and gardening is that way too.  So it's not a chore.  But starting out is more involved.  If I get the honey bees going, that's all I can handle for a new garden project for a while.  That and getting the rest of the raised beds constructed through the winter.

I think the eggs are similar to hen eggs.  A little bigger maybe, but I don't know that.  Like Spud says, they are supposed to eat slugs and bugs, so transform pests into food.  That's my hypothesis, anyway.

I'll bet your cats love that house Future.

Sentient, interesting looking ducks.  I've always found ducks and geese fascinating, and have known they make good slug and bug reducers.  Have also heard that geese make good alarms when someone is on your property.

What a splendid cat house Future. Your could start a trend with that gorgeous structure!

Sentient, how are Indian Runner Ducks' eggs different that chickens? They certainly have a regal air about them.
I just read the article and there is a lot more to know about ducks than I dreamed. I look forward to your duck project!, Will that be after you retire?

Ugh - if I could just get my cats to lay eggs.

Spud, you accidentally hit one of my buttons.  I've been wanting to raiseIndian Runner Ducks for years.

I can't now, because I think they need someone there daily, and I can't do that yet. I new someone who had 3 , naming them Huey, Dewey, and Louie. I would want them, too, for the eggs. And they eat slugs and bugs.

As for their poop, I have golashes and a place to change! Such a price to pay!

My partner wants rabbits. I'm vegetarian but if he wants them, like I say each to their own.
