Dallad, what a nice thing to read. Thank you for your expression of care. I appreciate that. And it is going to turn out fine.
About the rosemary, I cannot grow it inside or out. The leaves turn brown and ugly, and when I use them in chicken or other recipes, they add an undesirable taste.
There was someone on this site who grew it successfully. I hope they read your question and give us both some help.
About the pots, yes, clay pots collect salt. I just stick them in a big galvanized tub of water ... I usually do a bunch at at time ... give them a good scrub with plain water and a stiff brush. I don't notice any problems when planting in them. I prefer unglazed clay pots but they do need more watering than glazed pots.
I don't know about vinegar to clean them. I wouldn't until or unless I read another opinion.

This article advises Step 1. using 2 tbsp. chlorine bleach and 1 qt. cool water into a bucket. Mix the ingredients well to incorporate them ...

I don't like to use chlorine bleach because it is hard on my skin.
My routine with unglazed clay pots is to fill a big old galvanized tub with water from the hose. Stack the pots in and leave them overnight. Next day I use a heavy brush to scrub all the gunk off. Dry the pots and saucers in the sun for a day or two, then stack them on storage shelves.

Joan and Dallas, my rosemary is all right and two years ago it was just a potted sprig from the supermarket. I gave it room in one of my garden crates, a little fertilizer and plenty of water. It flowers every spring, I prune it now and then and put the washed leaves in the freezer. I don't know why it does so well, perhaps it's the rain and the mud ;-)  One rosemary bush I had grew too big for my roof garden, it's now somewhere along a ditch and covering an area of more than a sq. metre. Try watering more, that's all I can suggest.

Anything from Sentinent. Dallas have you any news?

Sentient has checked in with us already. He is doing fine. Go back some in the comments to see his post.

Joan and Chris, thanks for all that info. I'll have to read more detailed later on, but I'm not sure I have any place to scrub them good or soak them, since I'm in a condo. I guess I can use a hose and wash them with soap and water, but can't really soak them anywhere.

And no, I didn't know you were supposed to use a wet pot, but most of the time the root ball is pretty small compared to the pot size.

Rosemary will grow down here and does well in the ground. The one in the herb bed does fine. The one in the pot looks funny, and it was in the area where it got watered by the sprinkler system twice a week, so should have plenty of water.

Sentinent, it is a pleasure to hear from you. Some Cactus flowers for you with wishes of fast recovery.

I soak pots in a bucket - it works well.

Comment by Idaho Spud on March 29, 2013 at 11:50am

I very much like those cactus flowers and all others like them. I just wish they were not on plants with spines.

Comment by amer chohan on March 30, 2013 at 5:02am

Your wish is half fulfilled. They are on an astrophytum with few spines. Cactus can't do more than this.

Amer, why does my christmas cactus look like this? It's not sunburn, I know.

And check this baby out. This is some kind of mammillaria that I saw at someone's home. He doesn't do too much to it, but it's grown so much it has split this pot. I'm so jealous. None of mine look like this.

Dallas, first, sorry I misspelled your name! My guess about the christmas cactus is water on the leaves and sun shine burn. Water and sun together. You said it wasn't in the sun, therefore, I don't know any other cause.
Goodness! that cactus is robust. I hope your friend discovers his secret. It sits in a doorway, therefore probably gets plenty of daft. It sits on terrazzo, whatever difference that makes. When/if you find out please be sure to share.
About soaking your pots, I have had to use the bathtub or shower at times. An overnight soak works, and I put a towel under the pots so I didn't have a mess to clean the tub.

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 4 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

Posted by Christy Stewart on May 20, 2013 at 2:17pm 6 Comments

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

Anti-atheist post from an Orthdox Mormon

What do you think of this Facebook comment?

Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,

for once you and I can agree on something.  We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God.  Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism.  Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous.  Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
