I am a Post-Catholic (my parents made the mistake of sending me to a Jesuit high school and college where the Jebbies taught me to think for myself... Gave me the "tools" I needed to get beyond Catholicism - and - the supernatural) I am also a non-deist, non-theist Pagan (I adhere to the principles of scientific naturalism and I accept that the scientific method is the most valid way we humans can know the reality of the Cosmos we find ourselves living in...)
I - as a single parent - raised my children in a godless environment figuring that religion, if any, was their business, their choice, when they reached adulthood - which they have now attained.
On my son's side, the grandchildren are being brought up Catholic.
On my daughter's side, the granddaughter, while attending a UU church, is being brought up with a more liberal, a more scientific, less dogmatic world view...
I am not sure how I am going to respond to my grandchildren on my son's side since throughout my life I have tackled issues straight on (sometimes sacrificing tact for directness [not always a good idea]) and this might not be the best way to keep the lines of communications open with these grandkids...
Any suggestions out there?

hey ya'll,
i was wondering if i could get in on the convo, too. i'm not a grandparent, tho, but an uncle. My brothers kids are really bright (whose aren't, eh?) and i try to clarify misunderstandings they have about evolution and science, but their parents are young earth creationsists...far out! S. Hawkins, i totally know how you feel...I don't know if my bro would let me have any sort of substantive discussion w/ their kids if they knew i didn't believe anymore. so frustrating because both my bro and his wife are really smart, too...and yet, there seems to be a disconnect when it comes to epistemology and whatnot...

My daughter out my grandson in a Catholic school. He repeats their brainwashing. I hate it, but she thinks it is a better education.

Most of my family including one of my four grown children are fundamentalist Christians. Although most of them know we are not fundamentalist anymore, they do not know that my husband and I are no longer believers. One of my grown children works for a well known evangelist. I am afraid that if he finds out about my unbelief he will no longer have anything to do with us and we will never see the grandchildren again. So I stay closeted for the family's sake. Does anyone else have a problem seeing their grandchildren and being a part of their lives?
