Hmmm. Well one last suggestion that might be worth considering. I did an cultural anthropology paper once that examined the Ancestral Pueblo people of the Mesa Verde Region during the pre-abandonment and abandonment period of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

I examined Marx and Engels argument that societies change/evolve linearly through occurrences of social conflict brought on by struggles between social classes over productive forces and resources. Even if you don't agree with their thesis it is a very exciting and thought provoking topic with lots of resources to work with.

Plus, I do have a friend who is president of the Arizona Wildlife Federation and is on a few water rights/issues boards. Good resources there.

Thanks Ken, and weird you said that. Just a few seconds before refreshing the page I was thinking of exploring changing climate models and how that might affect people here in the desert Southwest.

It's an Anthropology class and when they say "Peoples of the Southwest," it's not just local Indian tribes and customs, but also current events and issues, Anglo influence, Mormon influence, etc.

To that end, it's really tempting to do an in-depth look at atrocities committed by the Mormons, but I'm not sure I can do that and retain my "indoor-voice." ;-)

Thanks for the ideas though. I think that is the direction I'm headed.

Interesting, I am assuming this is an arch class. The ecology and sustainability issues are a good standby you can't go wrong there. It will actually be more of an issue of focusing it down to be manageable.

Several ideas come to mind:
-changes in the cultural due to the changing climate (ex. conflict, migration, fight or flight basically)
-changes in technology due to the changing climate (canals, water retention features, habitation placement (moving closer to water)

There is ample information for each of these. I believe there is even a brief article by Julie Solometo regarding Southwestern conflict in the latest SAA newsletter "Archaeological Record".

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh ... Need a topic for my "Peoples of the Southwest" final presentation. Normally I've got a brainfull of topics, but today, a few hours before class, drawing blanks.

Kind of thinking of ecology/sustainability issues, but need to tie that into culture somehow.

Passed the Summer classes with flying colors - thanks for asking!

That got me drop-kicked into a full fall semester: Physical Anthropology, Archaeology, Peoples of the Southwest and Physical Geology. Though they are many 1st year courses, my previous degree should give me enough head start to start on 3rd year classes by next fall. And until then to figure out how to rob a bank to pay for it.

Anyway, loving it all so far! Was a bit intimidated by geology as the chemistry/minerals bit always stumped me. Seems though it was just a matter of getting a proper class and good teachers. I am a lean, mean, valence-state equalizing machine. ;-)
