Here's an article from Reuters claiming the same sex marriage issue will drag on for many more years. Sadly, I must agree with both you guys, Daniel and Grinning Cat, that we will see only a partial victory from the Supreme Court on the marriage issues.
This Reuters article is making the same claim.
Analysis: Top court's gay marriage ruling won't be last word
"GC, it wouldn't surprise me if you are tight."
Daniel, is that a Freudian slip or just bad typing?
GC, it wouldn't surprise me if you are tight. We still ahve a long way to go for equality for all, and attitudes continue to be fed by animus.
My guess is that the Supreme Court will wimp out on Prop. 8, and rule narrowly that the anti-equal-marriage advocates had no standing, or else that certiorari was "improvidently granted" ("sorry, we shouldn't have taken the case"). I hope for a broader decision affirming equality, but won't count on it.
The many 5/4 ideological splits in recent times emphasize for me that the nomination of Supreme Court justices is one of the most lasting effects a U.S. president can have. (Thank you, everyone who voted for Reagan and the Bushes -- not!)
Waiting for the US Supreme Court. Waiting....waiting....waiting....
My guesses - no more than guesses:
Both LGBT rights cases will be split mainly on ideological conservative/liberal lines, 5/4
DOMA will be overthrown on the basis that Congress illegally took away the rights of the states to define marriage.
California Measure 8 will be upheld, on the basis that the state has the right to define marriage.
Anyone have better analysis? I've seen several articles. It's like reading the old reports of what Mao would do, or Dong Zhao Ping would do, behind the Bamboo Curtain.
Perhaps the misconception, aided by some porn, that "lesbians" exist only to titillate straight men... that idea should have died a natural death long ago.
Carl, that's pathetic! I wonder why they chose "Lesbian" and not "gay" or "atheist".
Another case of religious nut jobs inisting that everyone must conform to their book of loony tunes. I think I would put that hotel in the same box as Chick-fil a and Hobby Lobby. They would like to do here the same as Islam did to the Arab world where it is illegal to possess a functioning mind.
So.....in my travels around the country, I sometimes use public computers in hotels (if available and free) to catch up on emails, such as those from Atheist/Nexus, alerting me to new posts in my groups.
Last week I was in Seattle at an airport hotel checking my email. I had an email alerting me to a new post in this group. However, when I clicked on the link, a pop-up message appeared on the computer screen stating that access to this webpage was denied because the filter was banning a certain word: "lesbian."
Can you just imagine the jaw-dropping, face-palm moment I experienced? I was stunned!
The pop-up screen allowed me to make a comment about the word, if I wanted, to be forwarded to management for further review, so I wrote, "This is ignorant and overly-controlling. Lesbian is not a dirty word."
I've never before experienced this on a public computer. I guess now I know first hand how it must be to use the internet in China.
I suppose this means half of the Americans you run in to are bigots. Split roughly 40/40 on whether DOMA should be upheld and whether the US govt should recognize same sex marriage.
