What is happening to Hateboro Crutch is pretty much what happened to Scientology, and before that to Howard Hughes.... unrelated money and power-mad weasels slowly take over and push out the founders.
Or maybe I'm thinking of the species of bird that lays its eggs in some other birds' nests, and forces them to let their own offspring starve to death while working to keep the voracious strange nestlings fed..
Susan, sk8eycat, LOL! Excellent analogies to people protesting equal marriage. (And I like the skating cat!)
Joan, thanks for introducing us to Al Vernacchio's TED talk explaining the problems in the baseball metaphors for sexuality, and proposing an inclusive, cooperative, delicious one: pizza!
I'll share it in Secular Sexuality as well.
A good complement to his talk is Carly Dreyfus's article "To Slide or to Slice? Finding a positive sexual metaphor".
(As Dreyfus points out, nobody gets consigned to hell for liking pineapple, spam, and M&M's on their pizza!)
Unfortunately, Westboro Baptist Church might well keep spreading their brand of vitriol.
Apparently Fred Phelps Sr. was excommunicated from his own church last August for "advocating a kinder approach between church members." (This after a board of male elders won a power struggle against Shirley Phelps-Roper, until recently their longtime spokeswoman.)
A Daily Kos author writes that Phelps unwittingly left a positive legacy, of making people realize they couldn't be on the site of hatred, venom, and bigotry. "People who hadn't protested anything before found ... they had to make their voices heard."
Some days I wish there really was a hell..."Ding-Dong! The Phred is dead!" finally. He caused enough pain and anguish for other people, and I wish he could get it all back...a"an hundredfold."
Perhaps the "loyal" children will grow up and learn a few things about real life. "I take no solace or joy in this man's passing. We will not dance upon his grave nor stand vigil at his funeral holding "God Hates Freds" signs, tempting as it may be. He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely dusty end." From the thoughtful and classy George TakeiI'm not as classy as Sensei Takei
Sex needs a new metaphor. Here's one ...
Or...a person walks into a subway, and gets angry when they sell him/her a ticket to Lower Manhattan instead of a sandwich.
I have seen a post many times on Facebook. A person walks into subway wanting to order their favorite sub and get irate when the person ahead of them doesn't order the sub the person wanted.
That is what people sound like when they say gay marriage affects them.
What I have never understood is why the CRASStians seem to think that straight marriages can be "threatened" by any form of same-sex marriage...
I sorta like the idea of polyandry, myself....tee-hee!
