According to the Wikipedia entry about Westboro Baptist Church, in 2011 they stated they had about 40 members, mostly family.  I think it will be interesting to see what happens to this group once Fred Phelps is dead, although I know his daughter Shirley pretty much runs the show these days.  Recently, since 2011, some family members have left, perhaps giving us hope that the cracks in this organization are widening.  But will this group retain a constant membership by birth or will it dwindle to nothing eventually?

The physical and mental abuse that reportedly happens within this family is also interesting.

In the video below Brick Stone says to the group, "You know Fred doesn't have powers, right?  I mean, he really can't do anything to you.  I mean, I know he hits you, but he can't do anything, like special."

The Westboro members obviously have a warped sense of logic, but I have to wonder if hearing those words causes any type of emotional and rational response or thought process that makes them second-guess or question their involvement with this organization.  The trouble is, the organization is your family, so that has got to be a tough situation to be in.

I feel most empathy for the children who are growing up in that toxic environment.  According to Wikipedia, Shirley Phelps-Roper herself has eleven children.  Their hateful and negative lifestyle is all they know.  Are they the young, brainwashed generation who will keep this group sustained into the future?  Or will this group finally collapse at some point?  I guess only time will tell.

Thank Westboro Baptist Church and the Phelps's for making homophobia gross and stupid!

Some good news from the City of Chicago:

Chicago Public Schools plans to have a new sex education policy in place by 2016, the district announced Sunday.  For the first time, the district will address sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as bullying.

Colorado lawmaker tells anti-gay Christians: ‘Get thee to a nunnery’

“Don’t claim religion as a reason the law should discriminate,” state Sen. Pat Steadman (D) said earlier this month. “We have laws against discrimination. Discrimination is banned in employment, and housing, and public accommodations, and so bakeries that serve the public aren’t supposed to look down their noses at one particular class of persons and say ‘we don’t sell cakes to you.’ It’s troubling, this discrimination. And it’s already illegal.”

“So, what to say to those who claim that religion requires them to discriminate?” the Colorado lawmaker continued. “I’ll tell you what I’d say: ‘Get thee to a nunnery!’ And live there then. Go live a monastic life away from modern society, away from people you can’t see as equals to yourself. Away from the stream of commerce where you may have to serve them or employ them or rent banquet halls to them.”

“Go some place and be as judgmental as you like. Go inside your church, establish separate water fountains in there if you want, but don’t claim that free exercise of religion requires the state of Colorado to establish separate water fountains for her citizens. That’s not what we’re doing here.”

Ruth Anthony-Gardner, can you show me how to create a atheist meme or gay meme? How do you start the process? Is there a formula? I've looked at atheist memes and I don't see how the ones on line do what I want them to do. I am the most un-clever person in the world, but give me a formula and I can rip.

That's a nice story, Daniel.  I'm sure that made your day.

Just something I can't get out of my mind.  I can't say I'm not out at work - I've talked about my partner to most of the coworkers who are closest to me, and my senior manager, and HR knows for sure.  I have speculated that it's at least a factor, if not THE factor, for why I was harassed into leaving a prior office location, where my performance by all measures was among the best but the harassment was intolerable.  So most of the time I keep to myself, and never speak explicitly, at all, about being gay.  It's not hidden at all, but I just keep quiet.

Yesterday the office staff were discussing their husbands' lack of giving them chocolates or flowers for valentines day. "My hubby never gives me flowers" .  In my role, I don't engage in the banter and gossip.  I'm just nice to everyone.  As I walked past, one of them said, "So, did your hubby give YOU flowers for valentines day?"  Blew me away.  I had never spoken to her about my hubby.

The answer was, "No, he's in China for Chinese New Year with his family" and she say "Awe, you poor man!  You deserve better"

Made me feel really good.  Totally accepting.  Nice feeling.

I still have some PTSD about an earlier life of abuse and harassment and discrimination.  But yesterday felt really good.

I am sure the "god made a gay man" video is a parody of the  awful Paul Harvey dodge commercial.  I could also comment on the issue of inclusiveness - maybe it will start an internet meme for "god made a .....  " LGBTI person.  Or even "Evolution made a....."
