Comment by Tony Carroll on April 14, 2012 at 9:24pm SB,I guess all this reading of myths from my youth is somehow paying off. Don't know about the Aztecs, but since their religion is derived from the Maya, probably so. The Mayan had a child/dwarf diety, but can't remember the name right now. This diety introduced homoerotic relationships to the nobles in Mayan culture, as I recall. Not for the common people. Such unions were considered legally binding, marriage. But then again, you could have multiple mates (if you were noble), of varying degrees. Interesting stuff. In my youth, got really into mythology, and expanded it to cultures other than Greco-Roman, which is where we stopped in school.
Comment by Sentient Biped on April 14, 2012 at 8:43pm Tony, thanks for the information about not-necessarily-hetro deities. I should make a list. I bet there are some in the Aztec pantheon too.
Comment by The Flying Atheist on April 14, 2012 at 2:01pm Well, some people like being pissed on. (Present company excluded. However, I've never been given the opportunity.)
Comment by Tony Carroll on April 14, 2012 at 12:33pm Hey SB. In the current, western religious belief system, i.e. christianity, there are indeed no LGBT dieties. Though homoertica is certainly suggested/hinted at. In the older religions, I'm reminded of Apollo, who had a male lover named Hyacinth. When Hyacinth died, Apollo took some of his blood and created the flower we know today. Also Astarte, who was quite often depicted as a hermaphrodite, had a class of all male gay priests. They were called Kelabim. So many more examples, to many to list.
As to why the press act as they do, you got me. To find the real "stories behind the stories", you have to dig. Pain in the ass. The press seem to take as many passes as everybody else does, not putting in the work.
And please remember, we as a community care about you, and I do personally." It is better to be pissed off than to be pissed on ". Peace to you always. Be well.
Comment by Sentient Biped on April 14, 2012 at 9:31am Richard, good question. I don't have any answers to that. I also want to know why there are no LGBT deities. Unfair.
TFA, the press should also include pro-gay religious slant when they have anti-gay religious slant. Their so-called balance is pandering to the bigots. There are plenty of pro-LGBT religious people and groups, so there is no excuse for what seems to be presenting the "religious" or "chrisitian" view as always being anti-LGBT. (Sorry, I'm feeling especially pissed off lately. Reading too many blogs, joe.my.god and holy bullies).
Susan, smart policy. I should be more judicious in what I watch.
OK, time to be more positive. (Yes, I keep saying that). To counter the evil lying harpy Kalley Yanta's "Marriage Minute" and the supposedly-married-non-ring-wearing-invisible-husband Vogon Troll Maggie Gallagher, and the magisterium propagandist has-been child star Kirk Cameron, here's the cute nerdy slightly scruffy Matt Baume with lots of marriage equality related news, much positive:
Comment by The Flying Atheist on April 14, 2012 at 12:28am Sentient....that's a very unique comparison....and dead on. The reason these folks get media airtime is ONLY because their view has a religious slant. And for some reason we're supposed to respect them no matter WHAT they say.

Comment by Sentient Biped on April 13, 2012 at 10:13pm I'm sorry for the comparison, but I wonder in the 60s during the civil rights era, did the press interview white supremacists about their opinions on civil rights? I'm so fucking sick of these people who get to expound their hate while pretending it's "god's way". Jesus H. Christ, no one is forcing those people to marry their own sex. Get over it.
