I could have my facts wrong about Perkins, certainly. I don't usually make mistakes, but there's a first time for everything. It may have been that he never came to terms with being gay. That's been known to happen. He always struck me as gay though.

As far as Vidal goes, I feel the same way about him being an "intellectual giant." He just knows so much more than I do, and he has such a broader perspective, that his writings just leave me floundering in ignorance and uncertainty.

Either that or he's just a bad writer.

I think I need to take back what I said about Vidal's disdain for labels - this bio is more nuanced  "Vidal has consistently argued that the term "homosexual" has no validity, because human sexuality is too complex and diverse to be reduced to binary terms."  That's a viewpoint that I can buy into.  I'll have to apologize to Mr.Vidal.  Not that he would care.  He is an intellectual giant.

Strange, I thought Perkins was known to be gay.  Not that I follow hollywood stuff.

Yes, but we certainly seem to have a propensity to do that. The music I like is the best kind of music. The food I prefer is cleaner and healther and better in every way. The gawd I believe in is the only true gawd. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Brando, as I recall, was basically hetero but admitted without shame that he had had gay sex before. Anthony Perkins also admitted he had had gay sex, but claimed he didn't really like it. But who knows, in their era there was still such a strong stigma associated with enjoying sex in general, not to mention enjoying gay sex.

Perkins was kind of cute in his day, too.

He could have been a model.  I think Marlin Brando was supposed to have similar thoughts about his own sexuality.

I don't understand why people generalize about everyone else's sexuality based on their own.  That includes Vidal.  So he's bi.  That's fine, no problem in any way.  There are also straight people, and gay people, and people in between.  Some people have fluid sexuality, some don't, and some are asexual. It seems narcissistic to assume that everyone is "just like me".

SB, that video is frightening. Here is another one. Shameful propaganda.

Gore Vidal eschews such labels because the thinks they are unnecessary and limiting. But he openly admits being "bisexual," and he's been in relationships with men.

I think he was a rather adorable young man.

Thanks for the video, Sentient!  It's interesting and encouraging to draw parallels with modern issues for me.  Also, who was that man at 6:30?  What he said is applicable even today.  It's amazing he could say something so progressive that it still needs to be said 40+ years later.  I tried searching for his quote, but I only got 1 hit on reddit with no name.

That was an amazing video.  I tend to forget how things were back then. I was a junior in high school when this was broadcast and I was madly in love with my best friend, Bill.  Even though I was in love with another boy and engaged in homosexuality, it took me years after this to admit to being a homosexual. I rationalized it all by telling myself that I had some homosexual feelings, but that I was not a homosexual.  I was a good person and homosexuals were terrible people, so I could not possibly be a homosexual.  It took three years of therapy to recover from the effects of this type of propaganda and prejudice.  It amazes me how much has changed since then.  Thanks for sharing that video.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
