Check Out Finland’s New Graphic Gay Bondage Stamps

Touko Laaksonen, renowned Finnish artist, is recognized with three stamps for release next month.

This fall, the country will begin selling stamps that feature the “confident and proud homoeroticism” of Tom of Finland, an artist renowned as “beyond question the most influential creator of gay pornographic illustration.”

To commemorate the centenary of beloved bisexual writer and artist Tove Jansson, Posti is also selling Jansson stamps—though they aren't quite as exuberantly queer as the Tom of Finland collection.

You. Are. Kidding. Me.

No, apparently you're NOT kidding me.  Holy Safe, Sane and Consensual, Batman!

Wow! Now that is progressive!

Is it progressive? Bondage? I don't get it, since when is bondage sexy? I just don't get it.

I dont think Tom of Finland is about bondage.  There might be that aspect in some of the imagery, but it's mostly about hyper-macho hyper-masculine fantasy.  The characters are cartoonish over-muscular, with ripped clothes, uniforms, massive genitals, and stereotypes of masculinity.

The stamp pictured shows a naked butt, and a man with a mustache and high cheekbones, but nothing about bondage.  Maybe there is some in the other images, I didn't look.

To me it's sort of a gay equivalent to playboy showing women with massive breasts and pigtails.

All of that said, if I ever had reason to send anything in the mail to a religious person, it would be fun to have one of those stamps.

Well, the title is Check Out Finland’s New Graphic Gay Bondage Stamps. The photos seem to have some aspect of domination and submission. Yes, I get your point of comparison of women with massive breasts and pigtails. You mean the aspect of women as nourishing with long hair and men as bare butts and face hair. Not a very interesting perspective. Perhaps the other photos will give understanding of what I see.

Oh well, it is none of my business and besides, I have to get out into the garden and have some fun. Thanks for sharing.

I see what you mean.  Going to the original post the full stamp page reveals more.

I will head out to the garden too.  Waiting for the postal carrier to bring heritage bearded iris starts from Old House Gardens, due today.  I don't expect any unusual stamps.

I just looked at Old House Gardens on line and my goodness, what a lovely line of iris they have. Really some pretty colors. I wonder if PALLIDA DALMATICA, 1597 is what I have in my garden. It was from my grandmother Whitehead's home in Tekoa.

Could be. i bought that one last year. it has 2 stems now so is one of the earlier bloomers. I will plan on posting a photo when they bloom.

Many of those are fragrant. I think they are more resilient, less likely to fall over, and have a more i teresting heritage, compared to new varietis. Tnis was part of my cancer self care, ordering months ahead, knowing i might not be alive to see the, bloom. And here we are.

They promote Spring shipment, I think summer is better, but most did ok with Spring shipment last year and have bigger bunches now.

I woild love if you post a photo of yor grandmother's iris. It would be as precious as gold.

I might have one in my old computer. I will check. I like your procedure of cancer self care. I know of nothing better.

Well, Marty, you see one thing and I see another. I guess there is no middle ground upon which we can agree. I just know I need to not read gay material and leave you guys to your pleasures.

Correct.  I think the problem with the headline is it comes from Slate.  I think Slate is pretty ham-handed on gay topics.  Their treatment of Mark Regnerus as a serious researcher and Saletan's essays`leave me feeling that Slate courts controversy for its own sake, driving people to their website.  If their headline read "Finland's Tom of Finland Stamps" or "Finland's stamps celebrating Finnish Gay Artist", it would not drive as many clicks to the Slate site.

Exactly, Daniel.  Using the word "bondage" in the headline is misleading.  Someone at Slate put it there for shock value and to generate internet traffic.

(Warning:  there is some nudity in the following link.)

Here's a Google search link for "Tom of Finland images."  You'll notice that most of the images are fairly mundane drawings of homo-erotic uber-gay fantasy stereotypes.  It's not really bondage at all.
