The Nigerian senate has passed a bill banning same-sex marriages, defying a threat from Britain to withhold aid from nations violating gay rights.

The bill by Africa's most populous nation calls for a 14-year sentence for anyone convicted of homosexuality. Anyone who aids or "abets" same-sex unions faces 10 years in prison, a provision that could target rights groups.

Nigeria is classified as a mixed economy emerging market, and has already reached middle income status according to the Worldbank,[56] with its abundant supply of natural resources, well-developed financial, legal, communications, transport sectors and stock exchange (the Nigerian Stock Exchange), which is the second largest in Africa. Nigeria is ranked 37th in the world in terms of GDP (PPP) as of 2007. Nigeria is the United States' largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa and supplies a fifth of its oil (11% of oil imports). It has the seventh-largest trade surplus with the U.S. of any country worldwide. Nigeria is currently the 50th-largest export market for U.S. goods and the 14th-largest exporter of goods to the U.S.

Why the hell give this bigoted, middle class country aid?  I feel bad for the LGBT people there, and for nontheists there, but giving aid to a corrupt government isn't going to help.

I say no one should give aid to Nigeria.  They don't need it, they dont deserve it, and the country is run by bigots.

We're NOT impotent!! We've just been under a lot of stress recently and been working long hours and we're obviously tired.. Look, this has never happened before! Maybe if you made more of an effort to be spontaneous once in a while..?

I think that it's a step in the right direction of an ethical foreign policy but there's certainly more could be done. I do worry that it might be interpreted in the same way as Bush's anti abortion thing was so it needs to be done carefully.

Or maybe Nigeria just isn't that into you?

Most powerful countries give aid for political reasons, not just humanitarian.  In some (many, most?) cases significant amounts are diverted in waste and corruption.  In this case, I agree with the decision for the UK not to continue aiding Nigeria, which doesn't need the aid any way.

And it does need to be careful.  It's important to have protection.
