President of Group That Used to ‘Pray Away the Gay’ Apologizes to LGBTQ Community

Alan Chambers, the President of Exodus International, a Christian ministry that, until last year, said they could "pray away the gay," has issued a formal apology today to all the members of the LGBTQ community who have been hurt by his organization:

More States Require a Waiting Period to Have an Abortion Than to Own a Gun

A fascinating infographic at The Huffington Post shows that many states have longer waiting periods for abortions than firearm purchases:
In fact, 35 states require that women must undergo mandatory counseling so that they can be "informed" before going through with an abortion, and 26 of those states require an extra waiting period of 24 hours between counseling and the actual procedure. Meanwhile, 8 states have a required waiting period for various gun purchases, with waits ranging from 2-10 days. [Click headline for more...]

How Not to Be a Christian Around Your Atheist Friends

John Dere at the Christian Post's Crossmap blog has some advice for Christians who have atheist friends... Which is strange because, once you hear the tips, it becomes pretty obvious that Dere has no atheist friends.
1) EXPECT CRITICISM. Don’t take it personally when your atheist friends make fun of your faith in Christ. People have been persecuting Christians for over 2,000 years, so don’t be blind-sighted by nasty comments and subtle jabs at your faith. Instead pray for your atheist friends as much as you can.
First of all, if people are mercilessly mocking you, they're not your friends. [Click headline for more...]

Christian Apologist William Lane Craig Criticizes Atheist Hotline for Something It Doesn’t Do

A few weeks ago, I wrote about The Hotline Project, a phone number where anyone having religious doubts could call in to talk to a trained, trusted individual:
Anyone who read about the project would know that it was not-at-all about converting people to atheism. The entire point was to talk to people who have religious doubts but have nowhere else to turn and no one else to talk to about them. Christian apologist William Lane Craig didn't bother to read any of that. In typical fashion, he didn't listen to what the other side had to say. He just created a straw man and started railing against it. [Click headline for more…]

Chairman of Irish School Board Resigns After Distributing Pro-Life Propaganda to Children

After spending some time as the spokesperson for now-retired archbishop of Dublin Cardinal Desmond Connell, Eddie Shaw became the chairman of a Catholic school board. Maybe that position makes sense for someone who has spent a long time within the Church environment, but what he did a couple of weeks ago (no, not that) has led to his resignation. Shaw asked all teachers to send home with students -- some of whom were as young as five years old -- a leaflet promoting an anti-abortion Vigil for Life rally:
"... The parent body were outraged that the children were being used as vehicle to promote a controversial campaign,” [minutes from a parents' association meeting] said. Parents who spoke to The Irish Times were very angry at their children being used in this way. One parent of a five-year-old was asked by the child what an abortion was and felt deeply annoyed to have been put in that position.
Shaw apologized at the meeting and admitted that he made a mistake, adding that he really should've sent those leaflets home in an envelope, a solution one parent correctly said "[missed] the point entirely." [Click headline for more...]

The NYC event for the Day of Solidarity for Black Non-Believers will be in Harlem. In fact the next closes promoted events are in D.C and Philadelphia. So this is serving the whole Tri-State (NY,NY & CT) area.

We're putting a special twist on our usual Mind Food + "Soul Food" combo. The details will interest you!

CFI-Harlem/Harlem Humanists will be gathering on Sunday February 26th to celebrate Day of Solidarity for Black Non-believers. This is a time to get together and enjoy bright minds and warm personalities. There's a noble story of freethought from within the African American and Pan-African tradition. This is a chance to connect with this tradition and each other. We'll begin at 1pm. The place is 583 Riverside Dr. in the "Brick Room". It's free. Just e-mail (harlem@centerforinquiry.net) or call (646-820-CFIH) for all the details." RSVP if you can.

See you there. Regardless, please share this in the next two days with all you think will be interested.

Thanks for understanding, Steph. All I'm trying to express is that I want to be able to be an atheist and still maintain a close and joyous connection to my ancestral heritage, just like people of other backgrounds can.

Sorry to hear about what you experienced here Natalie. It appears that there are bigots everywhere. It seems that AN is not immune. So sad.

We can't afford to mix the religion with ethnicity - this is largely what starts the fights in the first damn place. Religion and ethnicity MUST be kept separate if we're all going to live together.

The actress Felicity Kendal is as white British as I am, but she's a Jew (Jewish convert - I don't know if there's a name for that.)

I worked with a guy a couple of years ago who had converted to Islam - and taken a muslim name. Quite crazy in my opinion and the muslims who worked with him didn't trust him either; they were comparatively easy going whilst he was verging on the extremist.

Secular Europe and the UK thanks to its mongrel heritage are way ahead of the rest of the world in this regard; yet even now the interested parties are trying to confuse being a white/brit with automatically being a Christian - and by that, they mean god-fearing, bible thumping Christian - not the wooly "do good for everyone" sort.

I think you may be oversimplifying that a bit, Natalie. We have the records of the winners, not the losers. I don't know much of modern Judaism, but in the ancient world,if the Bile is to be trusted, they were a nasty bunch; and this is by their own account.
Comment by Natalie A Sera on February 20, 2012 at 8:01pm

Oh, another example: people condemn the "Abrahamic" faiths because of the damage that Christians and Muslims have done to the other peoples of the world. Well, Judaism is an Abrahamic faith, but Jews were decidedly NOT involved in the persecutions, murders, inquisitions or forced conversion, except as victiims. An example is that, in the entire history of slavery in the US, there exactly 3, count 'em THREE Jewish slaveholders. There were a significant number of Jews in the country at the time, but the majority didn't go in for slavery. The word "Abrahamic religion" paints with too broad a brush.
