Foundation Beyond Belief is a charitable and educational foundation created by and for atheists and humanists. The Foundation highlights ten charitable organizations per quarter in such categories as health, poverty, environment, education, human rights, and more.

Members join by signing up for a monthly automatic donation in the amount of their choice, then set up personal profiles to indicate how they would like their contribution distributed among the categories. Maybe you'd like to give 25 percent each to human rights, poverty, education, and the environment. We'll distribute it accordingly. By year's end, you will have helped support a dozen organizations in the areas you care most about.

Carefully selected for impact and efficiency, the beneficiaries may be founded on any worldview so long as they do not engage in direct promotion or proselytizing of that worldview. At the end of each quarter, 100 percent of the donations will be forwarded and a new slate of beneficiaries selected.

The centerpiece of the Foundation is a lively online community. Active members can join discussions centered on the ten categories of giving, advocate for causes, and help us choose the new beneficiaries each quarter. We also host a multi-author blog of world-class contributors focused on the cause areas, as well as humanism, philanthropy, and the intersection of the two.

On the educational side, the Foundation is building a comprehensive secular parenting education and support program. We plan to have 10-20 people facilitating communities for nontheistic parents in cities across the US within a year and to expand to other countries in 2011.

On January 1, we launched the full site, including the ten featured causes and the means for members to select and change their preferred distributions. We will shortly launch the social network and the first stage of our parenting program.

We're making no little plans here, and there's the potential to do something pretty earthshaking. But this is a community thing, or it's nothing. We'll need your help. Now that the website is live, we've begun creating a powerful presence for atheists and humanists in the world of philanthropy. Join us!

Become a Foundation member...for free! We have dropped the $9 a year membership fee. For the first sixth months of our operation, this fee provided a small, reliable income stream to see us through the early days. Those of you who joined under that system helped provide that extra support we needed, and we thank you.

But now we've now decided to drop the membership fee entirely. New members can now sign up for our charitable giving program with no additional fee.

We still have operational costs, of course, but it's now entirely up to each member whether to contribute to the running of the Foundation. We hope this organization is valuable enough for members to designate a small percentage of their monthly donation to the care and feeding of the Foundation itself.

Well, Dale, you are just darn nice. ;-)

@Louis: It just seems inevitable, and it frustrates me to be set up as a "nice guy" foil to Dawkins et al, over and over. He asked that question in the interview, and I specifically rejected the dichotomy. But that narrative is apparently too attractive to resist.

Wyoming is better than the southeast, from what I've seen. It's still a solid red state, though. My big point was that there are no cities. The closest it has are Cheyenne and Casper, each of which are around 50,000 people. The entire state barely…
