Foundation Beyond Belief is a charitable foundation created by and for atheists and humanists. The Foundation highlights ten charitable organizations per quarter in such categories as health, poverty, environment, education, human rights, and more.

Members join by signing up for a monthly automatic donation in the amount of their choice, then set up personal profiles to indicate how they would like their contribution distributed among the categories. Maybe you'd like to give 25 percent each to human rights, poverty, education, and the environment. We'll distribute it accordingly. By year's end, you will have helped support a dozen organizations in the areas you care most about.

Only secular organizations are considered for support, with the exception of our Challenge the Gap category, which features progressive, non-secular, non-proselytizing organizations. At the end of each quarter, 100 percent of the donations will be forwarded and a new slate of beneficiaries selected.

Active members can join online discussions centered on the ten categories of giving, advocate for causes, and help us choose the new beneficiaries each quarter. We also host a multi-author blog focused on the cause areas, as well as humanism, philanthropy, and the intersection of the two.

On January 1, 2010, we launched the full site, including the ten featured causes and the means for members to select and change their preferred distributions. As of August 2011, we've raised over $175,000 for 60 charities and have launched Volunteers Beyond Belief, a US-national network of humanist volunteer teams working for the improvement of their communities.

We've begun creating a powerful presence for compassionate humanism in the world of philanthropy. Join us!

Welcome 2012!

It's a brand new year, and we have a brand new giving structure. Also, thanks to the generous donations of our many supporters, will be starting the year strong.

Year-End Funds Drive a Success

Our fundraising efforts met with a wonderfully generous response, and we managed to raise $14,460 of our $15,000 goal before December 31st of 2011. Many thanks to all of you who gave your support!

New Giving Structure

In response to a member survey and after a great deal of thought, we've decided to simplify our giving structure - now instead of ten categories, we only have five. This will mean we can focus more closely on our beneficiaries, and give more to each one, increasing our impact.

We no longer have Foundation Beyond Belief as a beneficiary, but you can still designate some of your donation to us if you choose. Don't forget to re-allocate your giving percentages - log in and click Manage Donations!

Meet the Beneficiaries

It's the new year and a new quarter, so we have new beneficiaries!

Poverty and Health: Roots of Development

The Natural World: Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI)

Human Rights: Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR)

Education: Vidnyanvahini

Challenge the Gap: Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC)

and since the famine in the Horn of Africa is still a crisis, we continue our support for our Humanist Crisis Response Programbeneficiary: the International Rescue Committee.

Finishing Strong in 2011
3 Ways YOU Can Help!

1. Donate or Create Your Own Fundraising Page. We're trying to raise $15000 before the end of the year, and we still have a long way to go! Will you help us out by giving or creating your own fundraising page, and encouraging your friends and family to give?

2. Give a Gift Membership. The holiday season is upon us, and if you're wondering what to get for that hard-to-shop for humanist on your list, we've got just the thing - a gift membership to Foundation Beyond Belief!

3. Use Our Amazon Portal.  Doing most of your holiday shopping online this year? Well if you use our portal to Amazon.com, every purchase you make helps us - without costing you a penny more!

We're lucky to have such great members that give so much all year 'round. Thank you for your support!

Humanist Response for an Uncertain World

We've officially launched our Humanist Crisis Response Program! We were initially inspired to create this program after the major disasters that have impacted so many in the few years since we started the Foundation - namely, the earthquakes that struck Haiti and Japan. Many of our members, and we ourselves, wished to help our fellows in need.

Now we're set up to respond to major humanitarian crises, and the first we're focusing on is the devestating famine in the Horn of Africa.  Unlike the major earthquakes that rocked Haiti and Japan, this crisis hasn't seen the kind of widespread, 24/7 news coverage that those disasters inspired. Probably because this crisis has been a while in the making. Severe drought, as well as a number of other factors, have caused the UN to make a formal declaration of famine for Southern Somalia - the first such declaration in 20 years.

We're hoping to not just raise money to help alleviate the famine, but to raise awareness as well. Many people have not even heard about the desperate situation in the Horn of Africa, or if they have, don't know much about it. We'll be regularly posting articles about the famine in Southern Somalia on our blog, Facebook, and Twitter to help keep people informed. Please aid us in responding to this crisis! You can donate here, and help us spread the word by re-posting, re-tweeting, and sharing the articles we put up!

Thank you!

An FBB Member Lays Down a Challenege

FBB member Christopher Johnson has laid down a challenge to Foundation Beyond Belief and his fellow members:

If you're a FBB member, make a donation on this page and be sure to include FBB in your name, or in the comments section. If I can raise $100 from members between now and race day on September 4th, I will commit to organizing a local group of runners to run for the Foundation Beyond Belief sometime in 2012. This should be easy, right? If just 10 of you give $10 dollars we're there!
And on top of that, a generous donor has agreed to make a matching donation of $100 to the first ten PETAPack runners to raise $100 this week--so there's an easy way to double our efforts.
I truly believe that we cannot have a serious discussion about humanist ethics without addressing the subject of animal suffering. If you're with me on that, if you're a humanist who cares for the well being of all conscious life, then please join me in this.

If you want to take up this challenge, visit his PETA Pack site and donate! Remember, you only have until September 4th!

Why do you support Foundation Beyond Belief?

Well if you're looking for a reason, we've got 20! We're hoping to spread the word, and convince other people that they should support Foundation Beyond Belief too! Will you help us?

Here are a few things you can do:

  1. Go to our 20 Reasons page, pick your favorite reason to join, and click the ShareThis button. Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and tweet and retweet with the hashtag #FBB20Reasons all month long.
  2. Make a 1 minute video telling why you're a member -- like this one, or completely different. Make it funny, serious, moving, animated, whatever you want. Upload to YouTube, then send us the link, OR post as a response to this. Promote it like mad, and we'll do the same by featuring it on our social media pages. The 2 videos with the most Likes by July 31 will each win $50 in FBB swag OR a $50 Amazon gift certificate.
  3. Tell your friends to type your name in the referral field when they join. The top two referrers will win $100 Amazon gift certificates.

Thanks so much for your support!

The latest interview with Dale McGowan is part of the www.religionnerd.com series "Freethinking Tomorrow: In the Words of Today’s Freethinkers." The interviewer is quite upbeat and the questions will make you want to read RAISING FREETHINKERS again or buy it for friends and family. I know I have. Kind of had to, since I am the quirky interviewer.
