Joan, thanks so much for your comments! Nate and Emily's farm is constantly evolving. My mother, nee Silverthorn, would be so pleased and proud (died Aug, '01).

Daniel, thanks for the great video on watermelon cutting. Going shopping today! Watermelon is on the list. So are beets. I love pickled beets.

Randy, you have the right to be very proud of your family. The slideshow took my breath away with the variety and quality of their produce. It demonstrates that organic farming provides healthy food and doesn't destroy the biomass that makes life possible. 

This family appears to know how to raise kids, organic food and contributes to the health of the Earth. Those kids will learn many skills that will serve them well in their lifetime.

The amount of work it takes to create this operation just blows my mind. I am so glad there are people and parents who do this for their kids.

Ate hot cereal made of fresh oats this morning, compliments of my organic farmer son-in-law (silverthorn-farm.com). WOW--what a difference! They harvested their oats last week. If you haven't checked out their website and newsletter(s) you should. Sorry if I keep mentioning them, but I'm so impressed.

Randall, once I get the melon, I cut the whole thing up into bite sized pieces and store it in containers in the fridge. Plus, I get smaller sized melons to begin with. I'm going to try the method Daniel posted here. Looks really great.

Got on the bathroom scale, and I apparently underestimated the calories in those huevos rancheros. Back to the treadmill :(

Carl, unripe watermelon guts are usually greenish-white, and certainly tasteless. 

Pat, you must have a big refrigerator. Melons take up a lot of room. Your "alternate" breakfast sounds delicious.

Randy, I'm curious what the inside of an underdeveloped watermelon looks like.  Is it still edible?

Watermelon is good for you.  Between that and honeydew melon, I generally try to have one or the other for breakfast every day.

Except yesterday, where I pigged out and made huevos rancheros with several additions. Re-fried black beans on the tortillas. Chorizo on the frijoles. The eggs on the chorizo topped with the ranchero salsa, queso fresco and a green tomatillo and jalapeno salsa.  Had to do an extra mile on the treadmill to compensate.
