Also visited Blaine/Bellingham nearly every month as a kid. Most of the camping was done near Blaine.

We did 2 Alaskan cruises & they were GOR-JUSS!!!! The scenery along the coastal areas is top notch.

I have a nephew that lives in Blaine, Wash., right on the border. I keep "threatening" to take the Amtrak from Chicago to visit. Then, perhaps, cruise the glacier coastline to Alaska.

Once getting past the Hope area, we have lots of wilderness, rivers, forest, ranches/farms, lakes, waterfalls, mountains, small towns & villages.

Excuse they typos...I got excited thinking about the Best Train Ride Ever, and didn't proof anything.

Comment by sk8eycat on March 14, 2014 at 9:42pm

Oh, my!  I'll bet it's a spectacular ride!

My dream trip is to take the Starlight to Seattle, ferry to Vancouver, and then take one of the delxe trains east to Winnipeg, change to another train (a sleeper car!), and ride to Churchill to see the aurora and the polar bears.  Then back to Winnipeg, and east to Nova Scotia to see the tidal bore in the Bay of fundy....then south to the USA, ALL the way south...maybe take a bvus to Key West, although 100 miles of mostly water kinda scares me, then west to New Orleans (one of my all-time favorite cities) to see how well they've recovered from Katrina.  And then home again, I guess.

I'd like to revisit Mexico City, too...also via rail.  Parts of that trip were glorious when we went there in 1959 and 1960.... I flew there and back in 1961; borrrrinnnnng!

We're the middle of the province Felaine, about 8-9 hours by Greyhound bus from Vancouver.

Well, Patricia, I have wanted to visit B.C. for decades....(heh-heh-heh).

I love riding the Coast Starlight all the way north (though I've usually gotten off the train at Tacoma, because I have friends there).  So...If I ride all the way to Seattle, stay overnight someplace clean, but inexpensive, and then take the bus to Vancouver....where does that leave me in relation to your home? I promise to leave the next day.  Srsly.

(I'd love to take the ferry to Bowen Island to meet Spider Robinson again, but dropping in unannounced on a working writer is just TOO rude!)

Patricia, you're not kidding about health issues and wimps. Getting old ain't for sissies!
