Greetings all! Joan suggested I might find some fellow foodies over here in this corner of the world! I'm not only a foody in my heart but it's how I bring home the bacon (ha!) as well.

There were some weird-looking ducks in that place (it's huge)...white ducks with some mallard markings, and stuff like that.  That was more than 60 years ago...

I think the county, or whoever is in charge of that place (it's actually part of the flood control system) removed all the abandoned animals about 40 or 50 years ago.  Nobody asked what they did with them.

A duck dump lake. Funny!

Spud, You GOT it.  Joe Penner was WAYYYY before my time, but adults in the neighborhood laughed when I was trying to find homes for all the damn mallard ducklings we had.  Dad finally loaded a bunch of them up, and took them to a lake where other people had dumped their extra ducks.

Wikipedia says that Joe Penner was a zany comic, noted for his famed catchphrase, "Wanna buy a duck?".  I get the idea that it was his signature phrase, and people in vaudeville used it at times as a humorous question, perhaps to elicit a smile or make a connection with another person.  Is that close?

This morning, for the first time in at least 20 years, possibly as much as 50 years, I ate some cornmeal mush.  It tasted very good.

I didn't look at any recipe.  I just added what sounded good.  Some butter, some margarine, a little seasoned salt, a little parmesan seasoning, a little onion powder, a little soy sauce, and a little chili powder.

Felaine, what does "Ya wanna buy a duck?" mean?

Comment by sk8eycat on February 21, 2014 at 10:06am

Pat, I hear you!  I never buy brown eggs (especially "free range" because they can't be candled...I used to buy them sometimes, and often founds bits of blood and/or clumps of tissue in them.  So I stopped.

We used to have a pair of pet mallards, and within a year we were inundated with baby mallards...I was going around the neighborhood asking people "Ya wanna buy a duck?"  I didn't know that was an old vaudeville catch phrase, and couldn't understand why everyone was laughing at me.

That was before I began to enjoy doing my own comedy routines. Obviously.

Years ago, I raised chickens. I used to 'candle' the eggs to make sure I wasn't going to crack open a chicken meat omelet in the pan at breakfast.

I sometimes wonder if "pro-lifers" have qualms about cooking and eating fertilized chicken eggs.  (That's the only kind the local "health food" store sells.)  I wouldn't buy, or use, them on a bet.  But I have a very twisted mind.
