My S.O. and I are in North East Marion County, almost equidistant to Gainesville and Ocala. Ocala has a Science of Mind Fellowship known as Oakbrook Life Enrichment Center, and Gainesville has a Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, both of which we've attended, off and on. There is also a Dances of Universal Peace group which holds dances in Ft. McCoy and Gainesville, so I'm happy to report that Christian fundies do not have an absolute stranglehold around here... even if there are almost as many little So. Baptist, AME and Methodist churches as there are gas stations.

After hurricanes Charlie and Jeanne came too close for comfort in 2004, one of my neighbors approached me in the local feed store and said, "We are SO BLESSED that those hurricanes did not come through Marion County!" and he looked at me for ideological confirmation. I immediately replied: "Well... I guess 'gawd' didn't give a sh*t about all those people down there in Punta Gorda then, did he?"
The man looked like he'd been hit by a two-by-four.... then backed away from me like I was carrying some contagious disease. He no longer approaches me when we are in the store at the same time. And that's just as well. 8-)

I joined this site tonight, I've been a non-theist, atheist, rational person, whatever since I can remember. I left my friends, family, unclear relationships in new york state to take care of a relative here, in port saint lucie. I was handling the loner reality just fine until today when I attended a job orientation hosted by a former bass player from an 80s metal band and he kept thanking god for things like; success, strength, etc.. he threw out "amens" and "hallelujas" and the rest of my fellow orientees intoned back these same religious sentiments. Thing is, this guy created music with metal bands from the 80s, bands that I have appreciated (black sabbath, dio), sang along with in my teens in the late nineties, identified with. Just such an isolating experience, attacking comeraderie from my very youth, sucks.

i have become tired of the atheist view being looked at as just another viewpoint. the mouths of science and reason should not be gagged to avoid insult. i'm glad i'll be able to speak with free thinkers in this state.
