Maria, Yes, my daughter has done several classes in FLVS but I've never encountered any religious content.  What they are requiring your child to do is proably over the line.  I would very politly write to the teacher and the supervisor and request "non" religious music titles.  Explain to them that you object to the religious theme.  If they refuse to find new acceptable selections then it might be time to get some advice from the ACLU.  Many teachers just don't know any better and if they grew up in Florida (obviouly I did not)-- they don't realize that what their doing is a violation of the Constitution-- because it's the way it's always been done... ugh.  If they refuse to cooperate, get your child private music lessons and write a letter of complaint to the superintendent of your district... good luck!

My two younger sons are in homeschool (7th and 11th grades) and for the past years they have been doing virtual school (FLVS). When I was choosing this school year courses for my sons, I noticed that FLVS had added a guitar/music course to the curriculum. In general terms, it looks pretty good; the student will learn the fundamentals of music, and whatever is necesary to become a skilled guitarist. What I didn't like is that many of the songs they are going to learn are church/Christian songs like "Amazing Grace", "Joy to the World", "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands", "When the Saints Go Marching In", and more. So, after I read that they were required to learn how to play those songs, I decided to not register them in that class.
Is there anyone in this group (Florida Atheists) with children that are doing school with Florida Virtual School?

Enjoy sitting back, eating too much food, drinking too much beer, lighting explosive devices, and remembering our atheist founders.
