That is a really tough spot in regards to your son. There is a fellow SWiFT member who is having issues as her sons are excited to attend a class camping trip. The facility this trip is using openly advertizes its teachings of creationism to youth before they learn of evolution. The goal is to make evolution seem strange to kids, thus pushing creationism in public schools. I believe FFRF is involved, but I am unsure what results can be acheived. The whole thing is very subtle. I agree, this teacher should not be doing this. Can you imagine the reaction if a Muslim teacher starting making comments and discussions on Ala (sp?) and Muhamed?

It would be a sight. Fox News would get involved for sure.

And I am sure it would be the President's fault... somehow.

My 8 year old son came home from public school talking about god and Jesus. I explained that certain things regarding that are illegal. He told his teacher what I said. His teacher is very xtain. Everyday for the last week he tells me, "we talked about god again." He doesn't go in to details, but I told him if any grown up at his school ever tells any student to pray, to walk out of class, go to the office, and call me. I don't want to make things hard for my child at school, but what in the hell am I to do?

On a different note: I was extremely proud when I started to give an example of natural selection and he finished it for me.

Regarding the death of Hitchens. That's ok, The Grand Wizard of hate and bigotry Pat Robertson will soon be gone.

Get ready for a lot of sly remarks about Hitchens from the news, I just heard one from CNN by a reporter saying something about him not changing his mind before he died and hoping he is not in hell, no they did not use the word hell but that is what he meant.

You nailed it, Joan. Wife-beating and slavery were traditional for millennia, too, but that doesn't make them acceptable, either!

Nativity scenes on the lawns or in the parking lots of churches suit me just fine.  Some are interesting, others are funny, some evocative and others are just plain trashy.  The same for such scenes on lawns or at homes of Christians ... or whoever is so inclined.  There are some lovely people in my neighborhood who are devout in their faiths and beliefs and they like to display in celebration of their traditions.  Fine!

To put them in public parks or on public lands or on public schools grounds or inside is not appropriate. I don't want to see other religions displayed on public property as well.  Let's use a little judgement here folks.  Just because you have done if for years or decades or centuries does not make it acceptable.

Thanks David for the link to that article.

Natalie, I too do not do holiday art projects.  I feel very sublime for those who are absorbed in the massive heritage of song, decoration, and tradition toward a religion we do not belong to.
