Comment by sk8eycat on September 20, 2011 at 2:35pm I sorta cruise around in the Nexus.
I've been a member of FFRF for a few years, but I've never been to a convention. They alternate locations, Midwest, East Coast, West Coast. The last one out here was in Seattle in 2009, and I was making serious plans to go (I love the Pacific Northwest! Beautiful!), when I had to have spinal surgery, and the co-pays after Medicareless paid its "share," wiped me out.
Next year's convention is going to be in Portland, OR, and I'm thinking about it...again. I just want to get on the Coast Starlight and ride. Srsly.

i keep bumping into you :]
Comment by sk8eycat on September 17, 2011 at 6:25pm It really isn't the "name" speakers, or other attractions, that make me long to go to a smaller convention...it's the friendship, and meeting new people.
I used to go to the smaller SF cons, and just enjoyed staying in a hotel for a few days and shmoozing with people with similar interests.
Comment by Trevor Nelson on September 17, 2011 at 1:12pm I was at the AAI convention in Burbank back in October of '09. That was an amazing event. I know Fargo, ND, can't come close to offering the speakers or the options that exist in the L.A. area - but we do have non-toxic air here, so... Trade-offs, right? But we need to spread the good news of logic and reason here in the midwest far more than LA. You guys have already evolved beyond the back-water religious bumpkinism of the bible belt. Truly jealous of that.
Good luck stirring things up, sk8eycat! If we can make it happen here, I KNOW you can make it happen there.
Comment by sk8eycat on September 17, 2011 at 12:23pm *sigh* I love conventions, but am (currently) unable to travel. So, for my own selfish reasons, I've been trying to interest FFRF in holding their next West Coast convention right here in Beautiful Downtown Burbank...we have the hotels, an airport (I'd rather travel via Amtrak, but that's my problem), studios and show tapings to visit... And speakers we could recruit through CFI-West over the hill in Hollywood.
About 10 years ago there was a small freethought conference here, and one of the highlights was the Mikkelsons, the couple who run Snopes.com. Brilliant and very, very funny.
But so far, no luck.
Anybody wanna help me stir things up?

Comment by Secular Forces 2013 on August 6, 2011 at 7:03pm Glad to see that there's a black collar crime blotter (pages and growing yikes!) in your newsletter. People should know about that stuff; it's all over the news, that Ohio pastor xtian/w/gun assaulting woman wtf?
And is FFRF going to team up for reason rally(s)? w/American Atheists Inc. ?
Inquiring minds wanna know.
(great newspaper/letter you have!)
