Comment by Angela M. on January 18, 2012 at 7:23pm @James...I've been thinking about what you said in a previous comment regarding marital property. You mentioned that in a marital property state, the couple splits everything acquired during the marriage equally. I wish my own divorce attorney had been more clear about this. You wouldn't believe how many of my possessions from before I even met my ex is now in his possession, and his whole argument was that it was all marital property. He even took GIFTS from my own family TO ME under the auspices of Wisconsin being a marital property state. I gotta wonder WTF my attorney was thinking...?!
Comment by James M. Martin on January 18, 2012 at 6:25pm That's the point, John. A man who is comfortable in his own skin, who knows what he is and understands his sexuality, would not strike out at another man just for suggesting that they play around. Only someone like pRick Santorum would react vociferously to such an approach by another man, which says more about Mr. Santorum than anyone else.
Comment by John Burtonclay on January 18, 2012 at 12:05am Hi James. Because you took the trouble to comment, I found the details of the case for you to check it out. You'll find other links to newspaper articles reporting on this unbelievable judgement. Main points are: Not guilty of murder. 10 year sentence with minimum of 8. Ten bucks says he'll be out much sooner. Not that it matters, but I'm not a shirt lifter. They've never done me any harm. If I'm approached, I just make it clear I'm not interested thanks. Didn't know you were allowed to kill them. Punishment doesn't really fit the crime, does it? Bashed and kicked to death for a friendly gesture. http://indymedia.org.au/2012/01/09/eliminate-the-gay-panic-murder-d...
sorry i cant write palumbo unless i can call him a blankety blank blank.
Comment by James M. Martin on January 16, 2012 at 4:59pm sk8tycat, the rest of the Prop 8 money came largely from the Family Research Council of Tony Perkins. It so emptied their coffers that the future of the organization was in doubt for a brief period. I think the problem with IRS exemption is that while pastors, ministers, priests, et al for forbidden from endorsing a particular candidate, the prohibition should extend to issue politicking from the pulpit as well.

Comment by Roy on January 15, 2012 at 7:57pm I remember a little bit about the election in 1960 of President Kennedy. My father was a Baptist Minister and there was a great concern that the Catholic church would be telling Kennedy how to run the country. My father took the unprecedented action of telling people from the pulpit that they should not vote for him. He was wrong though and it did cause some problems in the church. But then, I guess my poor father was wrong about a lot of things. He just didn't know any better.
Comment by sk8eycat on January 15, 2012 at 7:34pm I don't think so, but a rather liberal church in Pasadena was in danger of losing it a few years ago. I don't remember the exact circumstances, but the minister had said something, either about a particular candidate or ballot initiative during a service, and the fit hit the shan.
He may have spoken against the shameful Proposition 8 that all the other churches were supporting (at least 50% of the campaign funds came from Mormon PACs)...the initiative that disallowed same-sex marriage in California. Anyway, somebody ratted to the IRS, and there was an investigation, but I don't think anything came of it, or I would have heard.
I think.
Comment by David W on January 15, 2012 at 3:29pm I wonder if any church has ever had their tax exempt status revoked for such a thing.

Contact the FFRF office in Madison first thing Monday morning. Or email them now. Give them the name and address of the church (a photo would help...), and let them handle it from there. Sometimes all it takes is a letter to the church asking them to remove the sign or face the consequences. They are in direct violation not only of the constitution, but of IRS regs. *snicker!* *cackle!*
I worked as a bookkeeper/tax preparer for more than 40 years, and have never been terribly fond of the IRS, but when somebody deserves their "attentions," especially outfits that get way too many tax breaks at our expense, I have to laugh.
I doubt very much that anyone in the FFRF office is a Walker supporter... ;>)
