Is it time to have a TV channel that produces news reports and analysis that argues the atheist point of view? Wouldn't it be cool to watch documentary of how our lives are evolving as secularist? Think of the amount of jobs that could be created for atheist thinkers with a televised network. How would it be funded and where would we put the main building headquarters? I'm thinking Washington D.C. would be a good place.

Permalink Reply by Earther on January 21, 2013 at 11:52pm Thank you! I wonder if existing establishments like the ACLU would be interested?
Permalink Reply by Loren Miller on January 22, 2013 at 4:32am Certainly, this would be a fantastic idea. One issue, though: it would require MONEY. The churches that put up their own stations do it through member tithes, and that money in some cases runs into the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. It will take a healthy fraction of that to put up something more than ACA's "Atheist Experience" on public access. We might get help from the ACLU and the FFRF and other organizations, but in the final analysis, having an actual secular broadcasting system would require individual atheist contributions.
Something at this scale would need atheists to join together, as I discussed here. Again, I have to ask the question: can we do this without a major anti-atheist incident, or do we have to have our collective noses bloodied before we can act as a group?
Permalink Reply by Kent Randi on January 22, 2013 at 5:13am I think we could get it started by purchasing blocks of time from an existing channel. Something like Current TV which has original content but for much of their day is repeats of the same shows. I think Al Gore is the developer of the station.
I know it broadcasts 24hrs daily on Directv channel 358
Alternatively there is FreeSpeech TV which is also a fulltime channel on Directv systems.
We could fill our blocks of programming with science education like those seen on BBC1 and Europe's Channel 4. We could have Atheist-Experience and other original content, debates, etc...
As it grew, we could possibly get grants and donors to help us achieve a fulltime channel. I would be behind this and would be happy to make monthly contributions.
Permalink Reply by Earther on January 22, 2013 at 4:19pm I think this conversation is going in the right direction here. Obviously there are many hurdles but this is how we evolve. It takes a lot of supportive roles to see growth. Many atheist, freethinkers, anti-theist are already specialized and can find an area of expertise to engage in and make a collective goal. I would say most of us do understand and desire separation of church and state in whatever government we have.

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

What do you think of this,
Nathan Young,
No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it. The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs. I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance. The letter was a mockery of atheism. Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

What do you think of this Facebook comment?
Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,
for once you and I can agree on something. We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God. Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism. Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous. Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
