new to this group, i thought this would make a great introductory post.  i've also covered this in a different discussion, but it seems best suited in a group like this.  as i'm sure you know, New Hampshire is proposing 2 anti-evolution, hence, religious, bills new for 2012.  i took it upon myself to email the good civil servant, which you can see below (please read from bottom to top):

Apparantly, you prefer the philosophy of the former.  Best of luck.

Dear State Representative Hopper,

I am a Pennsylvania resident, so it takes some doing to press me into contacting another state’s representative, considering I don’t even do this with my own stat’s reps.  This email is in reply to your impending legislation regarding the teaching of evolution in public schools.  So much has been said on this issue, much of which I am sure that you are aware of, that I won’t get into it too deeply.  I would like to reiterate that your proposed bill is an affront to the educational system you so sincerely seem to care about.  One can only imagine it is being done out of sheer ignorance.  This ignorance, likely as the result of religious beliefs, you hope to pass on to future generations of New Hampshire students, but to what purpose?  Keep them uniformed for as long as you can, but when they escape your public institutions of learning, they will enter private colleges and universities where they will discover how sheltered you have kept them.  What embarrassment they will feel as the wool is ripped from their proverbial eyes.  How sad that children would be misled to believe evolution is not true, despite all accounts to the contrary.  They will find out, but it may be too late to make a difference.  Why bother then?  Why not let scientists teach science?  I can only hope that you see the light, for your own resident’s sake.  Either way, your bill will be shot down, and quite easily.  You should spare yourself the embarrassment, and just give up now.

Ignorance is bliss only until you step out into the light. I think you correctly illustrated this.

I once heard an NPR interview of an SDA (Seventh Day Adventists) biologist who sincerely set out on crusade to prove creation once and for all. This required him to get a real education in biology. The result was that he became an atheist and he went on to pursue actual science. He said that it really was a rude awakening for him and felt like he was starting over from middle school.

I wish I could remember his name to cite this because I hate it when other people present evidence without citation. This is merely an anecdote, but still.

update on  this exchange (again, read from bottom up):

Rep Hopper, thank you for your first honest response.  If describing you as ‘ignorant’ was insulting, I apologize.  It was intended to get your attention, which it did.

As a concerned citizen of the United States of America, I felt it was important to point out that what you are attempting is unconstitutional.  Should I, as a non NH resident, sit quietly if you were to introduce legislation that legalized slavery?  Or attempted to ban free speech?  Your bill(s) are in direct violation of the 1st amendment of the Constitution.  I certainly don’t expect to change your mind.  I was simply expressing my displeasure about these recent legislation proposals.  I do believe that they are founded in ignorance, which really shouldn’t be altogether insulting.  Ignorance is the lack of information, which is apparent in your views of evolution.  Whether it is willful or incidental matters not.  Evolution is the backbone of Biology – if you don’t accept it, I recommend seeing a faith healer next time you become ill.

Matt,

You began this exchange by insulting me. You are under the impression that anyone who doesn't see things you way must be ignorant. You are one of many people from out of state and from other countries who believe that you should have a say in NH policy. I believe yours and the other e-mails I have received are from people who are arrogant and disrespectful so why should I waist my time responding.

I could, but I’m not in the habit of dumbing down a conversation between adults to schoolyard banter.  And I can only guess that this is satirical?  Do you use such snark with your constituents?  Do you really have this kind of time to dedicate to an email exchange where you can’t even respond with serious dialogue?  Shouldn’t you be rounding up ‘Scientists’ from the Discovery Institute to defend your position?

Can you rewrite this and use smaller words please?

I find this subject, much like Foxworthy’s material, to be unfunny.  I’m glad you think it’s a big joke, but worldviews such as yours make America the laughing stock of the international scientific community.  Kudos to you and your primitive mindset.  You’re a shining example of the American unintellectual movement.

That was Hopper's official response?!  Are you f***ing kidding me?!  Very professional.  Sheesh.  No wonder I'm so disillusioned about politics...

i think you replied at the same time as my update.  if so, read on, it gets better!

i've forwarded this exchange to the editor of the Concord Monitor, as well as a contributor to the Huffington Post.

He as much as called himself ignorant with his first response, so if he wants to complain about a statement he essentially agrees with, then his foolishness is self-evident.

There is rather an expectation that those who represent us in our government should be at least as intelligent as the average American, if not more so. If Representative Hopper wants to flout his ignorance with his disbelief in evolution, he deserves all the abuse he gets, and he has no one to blame but himself.

in all fairness, i think what he was doing was 'tongue and cheek'.  i highly doubt he believes himself to be ignorant, even if the facts maintain otherwise.

Rep Hopper seems to believe NH is its own country, not bound by the US Constitution.  NH has its own Constitution (as do all states) which he seems to believe trumps the US version.

Well, he can "Live Free or Die" all he wants, but when his behavior or legislation impacts others, his brand of narrow vision does not recommend him or serve his constituents.

As a born and raised NH resident, this scares the crap out of me and my family. Thanks for standing up for the country and not just saying "it's not my state".

There are a lot of "bills" being submitted that are making me think the movie IDIOCRACY is a documentary.

thanks Eric.  i'm surprised this Discussion didn't receive more interest here on AN.
