How did I get here? I never considered being a feminist, or not. I hope my views help.

I know that "women not funny?" thread was awhile ago, but anyway Betty Bowers is pretty funny and doesn't imitate men: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E4M39FRIGc&feature=player_embedded

Jef, I think your question would have been fine within the "non-sexist long term male partners" thread though I think you got some good answers here. It's not cut-and-dried how to identify a non-sexist male right away---sexism can be pretty subtle.

Jean, if I was going to address you, I would have. Like I did now. Take your own advice?

I worry sometimes about asking questions of the scientists on a/n, however i've had nothing but courtesy and patience in return. As Jean Marie says it is'n't just about googling or words from books ikt is about asking ourselfs and others in order to arrive at a broader based opinion. The word forum gives us a clue. Like i've said i throw things out of left field, shakes the dust out before everything gets to dry.

"I like to think I'm an enlightened male, how could I determine what category I fall into on a range of sexism?"

I think when it comes to battling any type of discrimination - whether it be sexism, racism, ageism, fatism or ableism - the key is to always be questioning your own assumptions and attitudes. Never assume you're enlightened and therefore not part of the problem! I find by constantly critiquing my inner voice I sometimes come to startling and uncomfortable conclusions. It's by analysing and addressing these uncomfortable realities that people develop and learn.

Feminism is kind of inherently not about a self-identified male's enlightenment. Am I wrong here?

Start here, since you seem to be incapable of googling for yourself. Btw, asking women to do things for you to make you more comfortable pretty privileged. Educate yourself. You're an adult with internet access.

@ JefFlyingV, you could start by not making yourself and your enlightenment as a male the center of your feminism.
