Hello! Awesome group.

I was in the Air Force for almost ten years. Now I'm raising a 19yo atheist daughter who is a skateboarder and competitive snowboarder. She knows what it's like to have to function in a "man's world".

Exactly what TJMorgan said. I believe if you arent a feminist, then you arent a... a... logical person. Equality trumps all.

I'm not female but I was invited to this group, and I do support gender equality. It's a nice statement to invite a male into the feminist group as it further reflects gender equality. Thanks! :)

This is so cool, every atheistic group I joined the most part of the members were men and I felt kind alone, but this is great atheist and feminist ... Congratulations.

I guess the point was lost. Daniel de Culla made a comment regarding what the word Woman means and gave a statement of previously used terms to describe women. The only part that anyone has focused on is the curse word used. Subsequently ignoring the wonderful point she made in her comment.

I would like to acknowledge Daniel de Culla's comment now. Daniel, Great point! I agree that people use horrible words to describe women. I'm glad you're here to help others redefine the word Woman.

I think words should be an issue to feminists! The way we use words often affects the way people get an impression or think of us and others. We should be very conscious about how we use words, not just swear words, but even ones that are ambiguous and can be very bad in certain contexts.

Ex. 1: That's so gay. (Gay = bad)
Ex. 2: What a pussy. (Pussy = womanly = bad)

And I really dislike the word cunt. Full disclosure: I swear a lot. I just avoid certain gay/woman-bashing words. Dipshit is one of my favorites. It's gender neutral! :)

objection! She was using the word in a context that has been used by others to describe women. She actually stated that Woman means happiness.. in contrast to "motherfucker in cool/hot labor."

Are curse words the biggest issue to feminists in this group?

I dunno what kind of women's studies class you got, but I don't agree, and I don't know of any feminists who would. I think that someone who thinks of men and women as inherently different is perpetuating sexism and sexual prejudice. And I think that people of all sexual orientations and genders can be feminists. I'm sure that there are some women who feel the opposite and consider themselves feminists, but I think that the term "female supremecist" might work better for some of them.

Anyway, if you want to learn about feminism, here are a couple of links from Finally, a Femininsm 101 Blog:
What is feminism?
FAQ: Why "feminism" and not just "humanism"? Or "equalism"? Isn’t s...
The blog is kind of hard to navigate and a little incomplete, still, but it's got a lot of answers to basic and frequnetly-asked questions.

You should also check out what's going on in feminist culture by checking out blogs and websites. Feministe, Feministing, and Pandagon are some popular ones, but you can find a huge list of links to blogs and other resources here.

Additionally, books and magazines are great resources. Bitch, Bust, and Ms. Magazines are all popular (Ms. being my personal favorite) and there are a ton of feminist books. My favorite introduction to feminism is Jessica Valenti's "Full Frontal Feminism", followed by bell hook's "Feminism is for Everybody".
