I just came across this news story about a South African doctor who's invented a barb-covered female condom to prevent rape. The barbs will embed themselves in a rapist's penis and can only be removed surgically. Meanwhile, the man is unable to pee or walk and if he tries to remove it himself, it only gets tighter.

I wonder how many women will be killed or brutally beaten by their enraged rapist after he realizes they were wearing this.... or will he be in too much pain?
Barbs + curare = the perfect combo.
I like the way your mind works!

Did you guys ever read Snowcrash, early 80s... there was a vaginal seringe which if not deactivated doled out 24 hours of sleep in case of unapproved penetration :)
McGruff (the crime dog) endorsement.... "Be Prepared With Rape-Axe Condom. Take a Bite Out of Crime"
Unfortunately, I usually talk myself out of a lot of things b/c I think of possible retaliations...
I'm guessing, hoping, Fred doesn't mean to not fight back. He does have a point though. When using such a product, be aware that while it will certainly put the guy in a world of pain, it is not a disabling injury (unless the pain is so bad as to stop the guy). Best used in conjunction with beating him over the head with something, or ability to run like hell, etc.

I also can't get over the disturbing thought that such a product is even necessary. Just so wrong on so many levels. But I would sooooooo love to be at the hospital when the guy comes limping in to get his rape-barbs removed.
Since it hinders walking I would think it would give the woman an excellent advantage. What I would like to see is this coupled with self defense information, including classes when possible. However, it is unrealistic to think classes would be well distributed so at least a pamphlet to help women have an idea of what to expect and how to respond would be a good start.
I had always thought that that much pain in the penis would do that. After all, when infants are circumcised, they go into shock, ne? And sometimes guys black out after getting hit in the crotch.

I have no idea. I don't have a penis. But yes, definitely something like this should be manufactured in a way that doesn't escalate the problem.

That can happen. But not always. Depending on the blow it can take several seconds for the pain of a groin kick to peak. And a guy can do a lot of damage in those several seconds. Plus, if he's on drugs or drunk he might not feel it so much. We always taught/were taught that a groin kick is best accompanied with other blows to keep him down/away/not fighting. Don't depend on the groin injury to be the sole thing that takes him down. It might, but don't depend on it.
This invention came out in 2005. I wonder if there are any reports of the results of actually using it.
I think it would be a tough sell because few women anywhere, no matter how rough their environment, think, "I am going to be raped today."
Yes.

Also, it's conceivable that a person could be wearing one, and maybe get drunk and forget about it, bring home a consensual one-night stand and subject him to it!

Too bad women never evolved to have the defense mechanism of the movie Teeth.

Actually, there are places in the world where it's just such a common occurrence.

I never went to my volunteer gig as an abortion clinic escort thinking "I'm going to get shot at today." But I wore a bulletproof vest anyway.
