I'm curious to hear anyone's thoughts on possible reasons WHY women seem to be such a minority in atheism. I'm a bit new to "social atheism" (I've been a quiet but not closeted, personal atheist for…Continue
Comment by TNT666 on April 9, 2012 at 9:15pm Cis-gendered is croc-speak. If males want to collude with the pharmaceutical/medical establisment to acquire female organs that is up to them. But the acquisition of female organs does not make one a female. To me, I see it as males taking over over the last bastion of non-male control on this planet, the very definition of being female. People who want to have surgeries to become something else can go ahead and do it, but to call oneself a female is not something that I find rational or acceptable. Furthermore, every single transgender I have ever met or spoken to on the internet (and there have been several) seem to think they can tell women how to behave like "real women", that is the same bloody thing as any other male telling me how to behave. This is why I have quit using the word women, because males are beginning to control even what that means. So now I say female and male, for these relate to your birth condition. At birth, we are either female, male, or intersexed. The traumas that occur later in life, whether they lead to medical intervention or not, do not change that.
There is no such thing as a cis-female. I am female, no more no less. Cis is used to demean females, and I've had quite enough of it.
Comment by Alice on April 10, 2012 at 12:28am J.E. - I would say if you use the female public bathroom then you are a female and therefore also be accepted into this group - IMO.
Comment by TNT666 on April 10, 2012 at 12:42am I totally agree that gender is a social construct. But unfortunately, that is what mtf and ftm are not rational about. In the name of a social construct... let's duplicate this social construct?????
I don't believe in gender any more than I believe in a soul. That's why I no longer use, as I explained, the terms women and men, but instead use female and male, which are free of psychological attributes, unless ground into someone at youth, just like religion is ground into the minds of youths. I do not live my life as any male thinks females should behave. I will not let any male propagate some social construct in the name of putting down half of humanity. Talking about gender is is just as irrational as talking about ghosts. they are both the result of dillusions. We are born with a sex, which carries with various sexual behaviour potential, no more no less. It just happens to be that the HALF of the human population born with vaginas have been subjugated by those born with penises. And just because someone chops it off surgically does not change an iota of how a person is born.
People with personality issues need to fix the personality issue, not change their entire physique to match some "social construct".
Comment by TNT666 on April 10, 2012 at 12:48am And for the record, I consider the terminology cis-gendered a derogatory term, meant to insult and devalue half the human population. Secondly, it is linguistically misapplied, the cis-trans couplet derives from the concepts of right or left handed molecules, and that is NOT the history of the term trans as applied to this 'spiritual' concept.
Comment by Alice on April 10, 2012 at 12:49am TNT666 - that seems quite harsh to say to someone who doesn't have any control on what gender they are born as and what gender they 'feel' that they are...
Comment by TNT666 on April 10, 2012 at 12:50am And secondly for the record... misogyny is something that penises do to vaginas. So let's not create fake situations to use it in.
Comment by Alice on April 10, 2012 at 12:53am I wish you the best J.E. hope you find some welcoming kind hearted compassionate people to share with :)
Comment by TNT666 on April 10, 2012 at 12:54am let's all repeat: gender = social construct.
let's all repeat, as atheists : we do not buy into social constructs.
If you're born with a penis but want to want a skirt and bras, go ahead. See if I care, but not deny the validity of half the population, "just because you "feel" it". It's a croc. It's insulting to human intelligence.
Comment by TNT666 on April 10, 2012 at 12:59am So us females do not have anywhere where penises can't define us. fant-f-in-tastic. Open your eyes females. I wear size 10 men's shoes, because my feet are large, in school I was as strong as all the boys, my breasts only developed in my 30s, and my clitoris never did much for me, and in my 45 years, I've worn a skirt maybe 100 days. Yeah somedays I felt pretty male... but I assumed it, by NOT buying into gender stereoptypes. Which is what transexuals do, apply gender stereotypes to the extreme.

"gender is a social construct."
I agree. However, sex is not a construct, male and female have different hormones and evoke different thinking and behaviors ... causing much consternation.
Gender as a sex role is a construct and one that can be open to debate and redefinition.
Using the words female and male, takes out the gender sex role to some degree, but as you stated,
"unless ground into someone at youth, just like religion is ground into the minds of youths."
You should not acquiesce your life and personality or
"live as any male thinks females should behave."
The beauty, power and good health for women is to be able to define themselves according to their own lights and atheism provides an opportunity to abolish gender sex roles in ways that religion cannot.
Of course you
"will not let any male propagate some social construct in the name of putting down half of humanity."
The good news is, we have the courage, wisdom and strength to stand up against such harmful social constructs.
Talking about gender roles is one thing, talking about sexual function is another. One is made by man and supported by women, the other is made by nature and the individual has the responsibility to be the definer of herself, or himself.
I have had the unique opportunity to meet on AN some of the most gentle, compassionate men I have ever met. I don't know if they are like that in person, and I suspect some are charlatans, but I suspect there are gentle men on this site and on this planet. I know my son and son-in-law are two of the gentlest men I have shared my life with.
Yes, delusions and denial exist, and yes,
"it just happens to be that the HALF of the human population born with vaginas have been subjugated by those born with penises."
That is obscenely insane. We have to remember that many women facilitate that subjugation. We, you and I and all women don't have to put up with it and many men do not participate in such outrageous values.
"People with personality issues need to fix the personality issue, not change their entire physique to match some "social construct".
Absolutely.

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

What do you think of this,
Nathan Young,
No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it. The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs. I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance. The letter was a mockery of atheism. Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

What do you think of this Facebook comment?
Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,
for once you and I can agree on something. We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God. Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism. Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous. Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
